Default Used car preferences

Our discussions generally focus on new cars. I was wondering what the forums views are, regarding used cars.

Lets consider these prioritized requirements (of a petrolhead )

1. Performance
2. Handling
3. price less than 3 lakhs, better still if it is < 2L
4. model year 2001 or later
5. Will keep car for 2 to 3 years
6. Budget of 50K in doing up the car.

I could think of the Palio 1.6 GTX / S10, Baleno, Esteem, Ikon ZXi, Sienna/Petra 1.6, Corsa 1.6, Accent 1.6 Tornado

# Haven't considered the OHC, since isn't the cost of a 2001 or later 1.5 Exi more than 3L in most cases ?

F.E. not a big issue
A.S.S. not a big issue (car might anyway be out of warranty period).

I myself haven't voted yet !
Am torn between the Palio GTX and the Baleno ..

Maybe the cost could swing it one way or the other ...
What would be respective price of the cars .. say if we consider the same model year .. 2001 or 2002 ?

i think baleno will just about come under 3L.GTX may cost u 2.25 to 2.75 L depending on the owner and condition.

but u will have to go and put alloys on the baleno which will be 15-20K more(that is if u want to).GTX already has alloys and spoiler. But do check the AC.

i heard(sometime back) that the baleno's condenser coil costs 30K.i dont know what is the price now.

so the baleno's AC can deteriorate to the extent of requiring a replacement over a span of 3/4 years ?

no there is no such problem as such but if there is a problem with the typical car then it will be a costly replacement.i think the palio's condensor will also be costly but i dont know the price.so any car u buy check the AC before u buy.

Any thumbrules which one would apply to ascertain whether the AC is working properly .. I mean whether it is 100% ok or somewhat OK .. etc ..

i have never even seen the Baleno's ac.But i can advice u on fiat Palio.

1)just start the car and swithch on the AC.the raditior fan should start.if it dosent there is a problem.u can also check this and see wether the cooling of the ac lessens when the car is at a standstill.if it does there is a problem with the fan.

2)check if the cooling is even from both vents on the centre console.if the left side one blows warmer air.there is less gas in the system.

3)The palio's AC when functioning properly does not make any hissing noises(it does only for few sec when ac is switched on).if u find that the ac is continously making hissing noises beware that the ac gas is reducing.

4)turn the temp slider to warm and see if it warms the air.slide the air direction know in all direction like face, face and feet, only feet and windscreen demisting.

all these are tips u can use since the palio's or petra's ac does not have a glass window bubble for checking the gas.

on the baleno's ac u can locate the gas bottle and see if there is a bubble in the glass window of the bottle.u can ask a mechanic to do this for u.replacing the gas costs no more than 1000 to 1200 rs.but first the source of leak must be located.if its the condensor is leaking then either walk away or tell the owner to replace it.

A guy like me would go for Baleno or Esteem. Keeping in view that they give good FE and Maruti ASS. They also relatively hold their value better and have a longer engine life.

I think the palio will be the one most voted for ..
me for one and probably will be the only one for the corsa 1.6 ..but it rocks in terms of durability and quality ..till now not a single rattle in my car , smoothest of rides ..too good ..tried and tested so i'll stick to it ..

this poll excludes FE and A.S.S issues...

I say Ikon, its rock-solid, wont give any problems even with very hard use and high mileage.

Oh and its engine is just EPIC!!! what a noise!!

Voted for Palio. Good condition 2001 models can be bought for as low as 2 lacs if searched for well. Generally have a low mileage (under 35,000). Had seen quite a few of them on www.timesclassifieds.com.

Baleno comes second. Just prefer the Palio over the looks and price as a Baleno would cost around 3 lacs.

Well I voted for palio 1.6, its one hell of a deal to buy as used.
Ofcourse, you should own another car for regular use...
