I think you should either pick the Superb or the low priced 320D with BMW package to keep the ownership peaceful

Look at the Superb, but do NOT opt for the current 2.0 PD diesel. The unit was known for issues when sold in the Passat, suffers from turbo-lag and lack of refinement. The Superb is a rare European car where the petrol is more impressive than the diesel.

Either opt for the 1.8 petrol or wait for the Passat's common-rail engine to make its way into the Superb.

What did you finally buy?

Incidentally, my cousin recently bought the Superb 18 TSi top-end variant (7-speed AT) after owning two Octy's in succession, and he is extremely happy with it.
