Hey

I have voted for Elentra.. I have test driven elentra and it is overall good package..My Uncle eventually ended up buying Elentra insted of Skoda Octavia 1.9 AMBEINT...

My dad also was thinking of replacing his Sonata... and we also selected elentra but we ventually ended up buying nothing..

So overall elentra is a VFM car.. and will be best..

I would go for Innova CRDi or Scoda since both have reliable diesel engines that can lost the distance..

And they are comfortable too.. No experience with Elantra .. so cant comment.

Max buddy,

its a bit like shooting blind because there are a couple of other factors to be considered on which you have not provided enough info i guess.

1. Will this be his first and only car, therefore will also have to serve him on his thane-pune run as well as do family duty?
2. Is there a budget or is it no constraint ?
3. Is he looking for an economical Point A-Point B fuel efficient solution or are luxury and pride of possession deciding factors too ?
4. Is he looking for a hatch or a sedan or an SUV/MUV/MPV ?

I believe if above queries are clear, the solution will be self-evident.

Anyways based on budgets,

Case 1 - On a limited budget 4.0L to 6.6L-
Various flavors of Indica / Indigo and the Palio diesel.

Case 2 - 7.0L to 8.0L
Hyundai Viva/Accent CRDi, Ford Fiesta TDCI and the Petra Diesel.

Case 3 - Budget 8.0L and above
Hyundai Elantra CRDi and the Skoka

I have purposely left out the MUVs/MPVs such as the Scorpio / Innova etc. Logic being, since he is going to be the only one in the car, he would be well served by something thats easier to handle and drive as opposed to something bigger.

However if he HAS to go for something bigger then I would recommend the TATA Safari any day over the Innova, Toyota's reliability notwithstanding. The Safari is awesome when it comes to ride comfort, has the required safety features / accoutrements, and given his running and usage, should be cheaper to run and maintain. and if luxury and/or snob appeal is not an issue a SUMO can be considered too.

However as many have pointed out, the Elantra comes across as a very good VFM option given the budget. The front grill design is however unfortunate.

I would suggest the Innova, its vey comfy highway cruiser and as your friend is planning to keep it for 4-5 years, i feel nobody beats a Toyota in terms of reliability and has great service.

Good choice by your friend, Max!

Time for introspection, perhaps - his final choice is the forum's last choice according to the vote, since the Accent and the Fiesta were not meant to be on this shortlist anyway.

Glad to see that it was MY first choice for the gent....which unfortunately changed when the vote was put out.
