What's this gargantuan V-16 diesel? - Team-BHP

Dear friends:

Spotted this beautiful red Volvo FM12 380 hp 6x4 tractor, hauling this gargantuan V-16 diesel on a flatbed trailer, on the Mumbai-Pune expressway at Khalapur.

Any idea about the V-16, and what it's supposed to power?

But thats an AWESOME engine. Perhaps its meant for some kind of Marine application? I'm basing my guess on those huge mounts which could only be for the bottom of a ship.

v16 on what car????

Jokes apart it looks like some ship's engine going either to the scrap yard or for repairs...

It had crossed the Khalapur-Sajgaon toll station and was headed towards Pune.

It doesn't look like a marine diesel engine to me. Marine diesel engines are generally taller with the cylinder block area on one deck and the crankshaft and sump area on a lower deck.

Could it be a diesel engine for a captive-power plant for heavy industry?
These engines made by companies like Wärtsilä, Sulzer and Volvo-Penta, weigh over 120 tons, and run, not on "high-speed diesel", but on "heavy fuel oil". They typically don't go over 500 rpm.

I still don't know the brand and bhp of this engine. Perhaps somebody from the industrial power-plant industry can help?

yh man this giant V-16 is a mystery! no idea man..i know that cadillac exclusively created this engine for super performance..

it does appear to be a ship engine on first looks but if ram knows a bit about ship engines then it probably isn't..

maybe it powers the Volvo truck on which it sits? if you say it can't cross 500rpm, then it might be generate enough torque for the truck to climb the Western Ghats.

on the other hand, don't enter the next drag race....

most certainly used in certain luxury and high performance cars like cadillac..mostly used in racing arenas...internal combustion engine like this is a rarity...

hey mate this definitely is a marine engine...but iam not sure regarding its make..as u already said its a v-16...and RAM u r wrong man..not all marine engines are very tall n multi deck type....the ones u r talkin abt are very big ones which produce some where around 40,000 BHP...dont beleive me? the bigger brands are MAN B&W...SULZER..etc..but this seems to be a smaller one...may b some where around 4500-5000 BHP roughly...and there are marine engines which do run on high speed diesel..but the larger ones usually use heavy fuel oil...which is pre heated to reduce its viscosity...then it is injected...

The 12.1 litre straight-six turbo-intercooled 380 bhp diesel on the Volvo tractor is probably just powerful enough, to act as a mere starter-motor for this behemoth V-16 sitting pretty on the trailer-bed.

hey RAM iam a class IV...but not into sailing now...i work for YANMAR (Japan)...as service engineer for their engines....how do u know abt marine eng? u 2 into this field? and yes...marine engines so run above 500rpm....yanmar engines run at 900 rpm producing 3500 BHP...can b used for both propulsion n power generation...

This seems to be a engine for powering a electrical powerplant of about 4~5 MW or powering some other machine directly requiring such power. Heavy industries such as steel products ones require huge back power plants and these engines are used. Similar engines are also used on some of the Indian Coast Guard ships. They may be running on high viscosity fuel or normal diesel depending on the user requirement.

wasn't there a news about it couple of days ago that Telco & some other company will be producing their own electricity which will allow to cut down on load shedding timings?
