Please read the article at the link below especially the second half, carefully.

The big pharma companies do dictate prices. I can give you an example on the margins the companies have on drugs. A drug that has been developed for manufacturing (by academic institution, which is rare) for as low as 30 (American) cents/ per tablet is sold in Europe for about 10/ per tablet. The company was not involved in the identification nor development of the drug, which is the biggest cost involved in a new drug and this company is not even a major one. The major drug companies have enough pull to dictate the terms of best practices as well as cost of drug.

I know the above fact because I am a organic/medicinal chemist working on development of new drug entities.

The SC has dismissed the PIL and asked the petitioner to show evidence :(. It should have asked the Govt to start an enquiry and see if the such drugs were sold in India.

I've been sent mails and handed out letters by Ranbaxy after I asked their MR about this fiasco. But even after going through them, I'm not confident enough to prescribe their drugs. I just wrote a simple thing to them that they must instill confidence in public, convincing only me (doctors) wont help. No reply since then.
