Default How to Drift on a FWD car ?

Hey Guys,

This is one area where I really miss the good ol' RWD Contessa's and Padmini's

I've been trying hard but just not able to settle my Maruti 1000 into even a moderate drift.....exteremely frustrating

Any tips on effective drifting on a front wheel drive car ?

Cheers,

J

In the middle of the corner get off the throttle and tap the brakes a bit and turn in...that will induce a drift in most cases.

thnx drifter, i've tried this and once even tried squeezin the handbrakes for the rear slide but the car either does a 180 or recovers too soon before it could even start drifting

one of my friends suggested i try this on the mud track that leads to the tarmac road on the Chennai race track....am gonna try it this weekend...lets see

by the way, what car do u drift on ?

Yeah but on a mud track you wont get a good drift because if the mud is too thick...the car will just bury the tyres.

On a wet road, turn the wheel opposite to your intended direction just before the turn and flick into the turn. You should get a good enough drift. But a FWD drift will never bring as good a smile on your face like a RWD.
Driving an accent crdi...not drifting much though. Dont have a race track here.

i tried this on saturday at bandra worli link rd. going towards town the road that turns left to go bandra reclamation. i took the corner at around 60+ and half way up the road twiched the steering of the car on the left a little hard 3 people were in the car the car's rear came out decent enough and i kept the throttle going on, turned out to be really nice luckily dint bang. normally i do these on empty or open places i just got tempted. its dangerous alright since im only used to doing all this in the zen only. accent was a new experience. this brake method i still cant get the hang off.

To achieve phenomenal oversteeer, get crappy rear tyres and good fronts. Empty your boot of all mats, wheels, jacks etc. Pump up rear pressure to 40 psi and front down to 25 or so.

Now take a corner at about 60 kmph and dab the brakes. Make sure you know how to hold the drift with opposite lock, in case the angle gets too wild. To get out of a drift, just point and hit the gas, it'll save you in an FWD.

Please note: This is all theoretical. Do not try this on public roads. Wear a helmet. Buckle up. C2 and C9 on the Chennai track are ideal candidates for this technique.

Also, it's bloody dangerous.

Latest drift was into a tree. Hehehe sorry couldnt control that one. No offence man.
This just shows its dangerous and even pros might make mistakes...donot try on public roads.

actually it was into a wall. i was in the car. the drift was going very well but when going with full counter lock the grip suddenly returned sending the car the otherway.

I am no expert, but isn't that what is expected in a FWD (assuming the car was FWD)? I read somewhere that one should not maintain counter lock (i.e., "turn into the skid") in a FWD for precisely this reason.

While on this subject, I wonder if experts use understeer in a FWD to good effect while making sharp turns. I found that in my Santro, while taking very sharp and fast turns, say, to the left, it is optimal to stick to the left edge of the road and let the car understeer to the right lane of the road turned into, while aiming for the middle of this road (provided, of course, that you are on a one-way stretch). Oftentimes you can just let the car rip through the turn without braking or even taking your foot off the accelerator pedal. Whareas, in a RWD, I would expect that it would be more optimal to start the sharp left turn from the middle (or even the middle-right) of the road and aim for the left edge of the road turned into, with the oversteer taking the rear end of the car to the right edge instead; with acceleration (and counter-lock if necessary), you can then right the car without losing too much time. Is my understanding correct?

Regards, rks

Rear heavy cars drift better. For example its easier to drift the indigo than indica(tried them both).

First time I executed a drift was by pure accident. I was heading at 90, suddenly the road ended into a right after a small incline, hit the brakes, yanked steering to right left the brakes floored the throttle.

A word of warning, dont try this at home. drifiting is extremely dangerous and I do it in an empty ground right near our apartment(dont tell my wife though)

More than the drift its the puzzling looks of the cricket players in the ground that why is this guy digging the pitch and the tyres

If you are in Bangalore.. comming down from nandi hill late in the evening is the best place to drift safely in Bangalore... Do it late in the evening when no one comes up the hill...and when every one else has come down there are some awesome corners here if yu take these corners at the right angle at fairly good speed around 80KMPH.. you can induce these drifts.. to get crazy drifts use a worn out tyre at the rare as V1p3r mentioned..i tried this one a couple of years back with my fiancé as my navigator .. btw view of sunset on nandi hills are awesome
