My earliest memories are reading his articles in the Illustrated Weekly which used to be around.

Never understood his artices at that age as I was small but i do remember that each issue used to create a considerable amount fo debate in the house!

Many years later i started reading some of his stuff and found them interesting and diverse with many being a few years ahead of its time and thus controversial.

God Bless his Soul!

Shri Khushwant Singh, the scholarly, acerbic and fearless writer, also the Bhismapitamah of journalism in India is no more.

He never met anyone without an appointment and was totally unconventional when it came to faith in the almighty. His writings were straight from the heart and may have offended many, but he gained more and more loyal readers of his works.

India has lost one of its most knowledgeable and greatest writers.

Above: Some of the letters he wrote to me (Anjan), Mrs (Uma) and my daughter (Onjula) are posted here. One was written from his Kasauli home during summer, which was his retreat to escape the Delhi heat wave. These are only memories now.

His decades old joke about the Ambassador ( he owned one during his stint as Editor, Illustrated Weekly of India, Bombay in the 1970's) was:

"All body parts of my car make noise except its horn."

May his great soul Rest In Peace.

RIP Mr Singh. He was a bold and courageous man who spared none while speaking or writing, including himself. He surely will be missed.

OTT, it would be interesting to see a movie based on his life .

The short stories in ICSE are changed every 2 to 3 years. The portrait of a lady by Khushwant Singh was very much present in our ICSE as well as ISC.
OT: We read Julius Caesar in ICSE, but now it is not being taught. Rather As you like it was taught post 2009/10.
