The fancied ones are falling like nine pins. The Group C matches of yesterday were far better to watch than those of Group D. Italy-Uruguay was very disappointing - dull, boring and dirty at times. As for Suárez, he rises like a phoenix to become a hero one day, and immediately falls to a zero the next. I think he wouldn't be able to satisfy his hunger (for goals as well as an opponent's flesh) any more in this tournament.

Italy v Uruguay was really disgusting to watch. The dramatics of both sides totally overshadowed anything positive on the field, diving away to glory and in general playing an ill-tempered game that brought nobody joy. Suarez's bite was the low point, which is ironic considering a red card was also issued (which seemed a tad harsh). no tears for teh Azzuri though- they played badly throughout and deserved to be knocked out.

OT - don't remember now - did you get these cards with some chewing gum or ?
Among many a house shifting, luckily, these cards were safely forgotten along with my meager collection of stamps in an old Mackintosh chocolate tin.

Right, these came with a bubblegum then named 'WorldCup'. The back of each card has a brief information and statistics of a participating country.

I somehow have only pity for the guy for his antics but respect for the way he plays and scores. A flawed genius. Maybe deeply flawed. Yes, it has no place in the field but I just cannot get past his game play. Maybe we all have our dark sides. His just comes out into the open - too many times

Hahaha, so I did remember correctly. Yes! I remember swapping cards, discussing endlessly on games we hadn't even watched!

Italy paid the price for their highly defensive play, they lack a quality striker, Balotelli is highly overrated & hopeless player. Pirlo has lost his touch, I guess time to retire.

Uruguay was a better side & deserved to win. What's wrong with Suarez? Can't believe a professional player like him getting into cheap antics like biting opponents Was lucky to escape the Red card yesterday...

Yesterdays Italy vs Uruguay was more of a wrestling match than a football. I thought Suarez biting or attempted biting was funny. Poor fellow wanted to bite but got a hit instead and what happened after that was even funnier with Chiellini crying foul to the referee by showing off his shoulder

In fact the biting incident is nothing new for Suarez, he has been penalized twice before in two separate incidents. He will surely be banned from the cup now.

South American countries: Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Columbia, Uruguay, Ecuador

North American: Mexico, Costa Rica, USA

Based on their game in this world cup, not on their win or loss,
  • Who among Chile, Columbia, Uruguay, Mexico is better and next?
  • Isn't it Chile and Mexico?
  • Are they better than Brazil, Argentina?
  • Does Costa Rica and USA come any close?
  • Did Costa Rica play better then Uruguay?
  • How about Ecuador?

I ask because I missed watching many of their games. I don't think Uruguay can proceed much forward, if Suarez goes home. And I think Costa Rica's wins were more presented by their opponent's lackluster game rather than a victory snatched from them. Columbia didn't seem as sharp. Any body think otherwise?

Upcoming games next round:
  • Brazil vs Chile
  • Mexico vs Netherlands
  • Columbia vs Uruguay
  • Costa Rica vs Greece

and probably,
  • Ecuador vs Argentina
  • USA vs Belgium

Any comments?

Germany, all the way!
However, if I were to root for an underdog, it'd be Chile. Their clash with Brazil made this a lot more interesting.

Argentina all the way.

I fancy Argentina may score about 4 today. They always start slow, and now is the time to shift up a gear or two.

Assuming if Suarez is "banned" for his "vampire" act, what do you guys think about Uruguay's team without him?

Argentine-Nigeria was a blinder. Thrilling match till about 60 minutes after which the pace dropped. Messi being substituted might have caused it. I have always had a soft spot for Nigeria ever since they demolished Bulgaria in '94 USA. Its also a well known fact that they usually finish near the top in the African Cup of Nations.

Messi was mesmerizing. The free-kick was simply astonishing. Nigeria almost never gave up. Though they had little ball possession, they attacked whenever opportunities existed.
Towards the end, I thought both teams must have got information on the status of the other match in their group. Knowing that they both will qualify, the pace and quality of the match was let down.

Overall, it was an exciting night.

My ideal semifinal quartet would be Brazil, Argentina, Netherlands and Germany. It still looks on track for that. Lets see.
Although I am traditionally a Germany supporter, would be happy if any one of the above four wins.

I'm wondering why none of those who actually got bitten actually managed to break his teeth so that he could not repeat this again.

Today will be deciding day for Ghana and USA. From what I see, Portugal is almost out of the tournament. Both the Group G matches should be interesting today.
