It's a perennial sponsorship-performance-visibility catch-22 situation for every sport except cricket in our country.

No sponsorship means no money to train and enhance performance, means no visibility in a crowded sponsorship market, means no money to improve.

Rinse & repeat ad infinitum.

Until we lose our singular craze for cricket (we aren't even the best at that either), we'll never be good at anything else. Someone will have to invest in other sports long-term without hoping for quick gains, but why do that when cricket can return instant profits?

On the France and Honduras game:

It was bemusing to see the Honduras players target French players more than the ball itself. Had they spent 50% of this effort on the ball, I am sure they could have had at least one goal.

While its funny to see a player make a big deal of every fall, its also heartening to see game spirit between opponents in some of the matches.

A good game on today - Germany vs Portugal.

Love the germans - though they've beaten my favourite Argentina on the last 2 world cups. Would be interesting to see how Ronaldo plays - injury scare?

CR7 underperforms again! I have a gut feeling Germany is going to face Brazil in the cup final.

Effortless win by Germans today. It became a no contest after that stupidity from Pepe. Can Muller make it two golden boots in a row? Hope Hummels is okay.

Clinical performance by Germany. What the hell was Pepe thinking! I have a feeling it's going to be Germany vs Netherlands in the Finals

Yesterday Portugal looked like Zombies on field. I am sure they would have smoked some pot and playing especially Pepe. Even India could have got the better of Portugal yesterday. The 2nd funny part was the free kick from Ronaldo, only 1 German standing as wall and he hits his legs

Unfair! The Geman defence was rock solid. I loved the clean tackles to take possession; hardly any fouls against the Germans while the Portuguese were all over the place at the back, though in all fairness some of their attacks were pretty good.
Pepe's shenanigans were bewildering, since the referee was ready to rule play on ignoring Mueller's theatrics. Real shame!

This has been proved many a times with Portugal. Once they get on the back foot, they seem so desperate and commit serious mistakes including physical contacts. Sad that they cannot convert their frustration into good football. Though a bit harsh, the referee has all the right to award a penalty for fouling what looked like a sure goal. Are we sure that if it was not for the penalty, could Portugal stop Germany scoring a goal very sooner?

Germany on the other hand, was beautifully launching long passes and what control they got taking the ball. But they are no where near the punch of the Netherlands, the commitment was not up to the mark with especially Ozil off color. I do not agree that defending is Germany's strength. It is the precision, as with their engineering. Measured long passes, and once they get the ball in the D, they don't miss the net often. IMO, the most dangerous team to get a corner is Germany.

Ah comeon, Pepe's stupidity got him off the field. You just do not do something like that on the field. And moreover, I thought the game was quite clean by Germany anyway.

Any clues why Ozeil left so early? Why was his face so pink when he walked out? Was he the one who got hit on the face while standing in the wall when Ronaldo took that first free-kick?

To me it looked like Ronaldo was keen on breaking a German's face rather than scoring a goal.

I thought yesterday was not (only) about long passes - in fact the current German team from the time of the 2008 Euro cup has been playing a non-German kind of football - more like the Holland's total football (the style was ditched by Holland last time around - but Van Gaal has thankfully brought it back). Aggressive flowing football - very beautiful to watch

Interestingly many Euro teams are trying to play this brand - notably Italy. Good midfield play. It was a treat to watch with England also taking a similar approach. Actually I've started loving Italy for the first time. Hail Pirlo and Prandelli!!

Tonight Hazard and Kompany are taking the field

Brazil Vs Mexico will also be a treat.

Yummy - am in love with almost all the teams this time. Except Portugal - as some commentator said a few tourneys back, they have a tendency to self destruct. Gone are the days of the golden generation of early part of last decade

@Latheesh : That was a bit harsh. I thought both the decisions were correct - penalty as well as the red card

Portugal love the self-destruct button, don't they? The ref was willing to let things move on before 'Pepe the Petulant' decides it was somehow a good idea to argue and butt heads with an opponent.

What's worse than yesterday's loss is Portugal now has two influential players out through injury and Ronaldo is nowhere near 100%, his claims otherwise notwithstanding. Portugal don't look like they'll make it out of this group unless they can pull a rabbit out of a hat next game.

Germany look like an amalgamation of Italian defense and Dutch ruthlessness, all combined with German precision. They looked a bit off on the shooting for bits of the game though, but that's easily solvable on the training pitch.

Definitely, Germany has come a long way but I felt more long passes happening with Germany than any other team. That is not bad either, the takes are almost perfect as are the passes. Utilization of the field through ground passes and dribbling, from 60% till 80% towards the opponent post, is limited in their case. This is not the case with Italy, they keep on pondering with ground passes in this area. Whereas the Dutch just penetrates through.
