Default Intriguing & bizarre story of a recluse!

http://www.gq.com/news-politics/news...st-true-hermit

"For nearly thirty years, a phantom haunted the woods of Central Maine. Unseen and unknown, he lived in secret, creeping into homes in the dead of night and surviving on what he could steal. To the spooked locals, he became a legend—or maybe a myth. They wondered how he could possibly be real. Until one day last year, the hermit came out of the forest"

One amazing story mate. Just shared on fb. For someone to do this, there has to be something wrong up there or a divine calling. Just unbelievable.

Yes, there cannot be any reason to do this. What meticulous planning, perseverance, all for just being alone. He is really one of a kind.

Taking a step further in to this:

A Russian family - 40 years of isolation..

This is way more chill-to-the-spine to read.

"...With no audience, no one to perform for, I was just there. There was no need to define myself; I became irrelevant. The moon was the minute hand, the seasons the hour hand. I didn't even have a name. I never felt lonely. To put it romantically: I was completely free."
What in interesting story. Any idea how much time he finally got in jail?

Totally unimagineable. How can one survive like this for so many years? And he said he has never fallen sick! WOW

Haven't read it yet, but being alone puts one in a totally different dimension than being in a company. Is it not?

I agree.
This family was together - but they were actually "isolated".
As in, they didn't steal/live off anything - apart from their own foraging/hunting.

Do give it a read

Read it just now. Shaken. We take things for granted and complain at the slightest discomfort. Everyone should read this to realize how lucky we are. But it is baffling that in both the cases, in spite of the hardships they prefer to continue to live their way. Amazing.

What an amazing read. Thanks for sharing this.

Have to admit that the urge to just leave everything and lead such a life appeals to some part of one's heart. That someone actually managed to do so and for such a long time, is just incredible.

Also, reminded me about the beautiful movie 'Into the wild'. Please do watch if you haven't.

I believe 7 months, with some riders on release on what he can/can't do.

Takes an enormous amount of courage to live like that, and I sort of sympathize with him when he says he doesn't want to fit into the world. Given what our world has become (and is becoming everyday), can we really blame him for wanting nothing to do with it?

Did you read the other story about Russian Family? It is even more challenging as they never had access to outside world for over 40 years.

"Famine was an ever-present danger in these circumstances, and in 1961 it snowed in June. The hard frost killed everything growing in their garden, and by spring the family had been reduced to eating shoes and bark. Akulina chose to see her children fed, and that year she died of starvation. The rest of the family were saved by what they regarded as a miracle: a single grain of rye sprouted in their pea patch. The Lykovs put up a fence around the shoot and guarded it zealously night and day to keep off mice and squirrels. At harvest time, the solitary spike yielded 18 grains, and from this they painstakingly rebuilt their rye crop"
