JKdas, Airtel hold the Blackberry rights here in India and one of the restrictive practices they have put in place is that any Blackberry purchsed from outside India DOES NOT FUNCTION here unless the user is "roaming" in India and is part of a foreign network.

That is the issue that Sohail is facing if I'm not mistaken, so how will googling help him in any way?

Suman... Airtel had blackberry rights in India... Not anymore.. They had a 1 year holding on it... Hutch has also come out with it now.. I am constantly being bugged by these guys to change over to Hutch from Airtel...

Airtel locks the blackberry sold by them..upon request they will unlock the phone for you..Try contacting the service provoder you are planning on using the Blackberry with..they will unlock the phone for you..

I know of at least two guys who had bought phones from outside the country and approached Airtel for the service - they were turned down.

They may have changed their approach NOW with Hutch having got the rights as well, but they certainly weren't doing so in August. That's one of the reasons why I bought the 8700 here (handheld plus service) instead of getting it down from our central "pool" in Hong Kong............

Sohail was approaching them anyway from what he'd last told me, we'll only know once he's back from his honeymoon I guess

OK Guys...got the procedure.. If you have an existing Blackberry connection from Airtel then this is the way my friend went about getting his phone unlocked.

"write a mail to Airtel and tell them that ur travelling on work to US and u need to use the blackberry handset as it would be expensive to use the airtel services on roaming so you would prefer to use a local connection in US for the duration of the stay.u request for a unlock code. "

They gave him the unlock code in 3 days.. Once he unlocked the phone he transferred the connection to Hutch.

Godfather, in Sohail's (and also I presume in the one narrated by daMotorhead) case, its the other way round - someone has purchased the handheld outside & brought it in & Airtel is not (or is unable to) activating it.

Can you share some information on this aspect, which is the one under discussion?

Cheers
