| Good news! The Maharashtra government has cleared a proposal to make wine and mild beer avaliable at local grocery stores and malls. Don't say cheers yet because it gets better - even eating joints that don't possess a liquor licence will be allowed to servie wine. All this the government says is to pave the way for exclusive wine bars that will serve locally made wines and snacks. When I read this news report, two questions came to my mind. 1. At a time when the government deems it fit to ban AXN for a certain programme, what made a congress ruled state adopt this bold decision in the land of the mahatma? (Liquor and Mahatma.......get the drift?) 2. Why the favoritism towards wine? I found the answer to question no. 2 towards the end of the article. It has to do with someone called Mr. Sharad Pawar and his business. Quote:
Story: The Times of India: Your grocer will sell beer and wine soon.

| BHPian | Ummm, how is it different from Fabmall (now known as More) having an Alcohol section here in Bangalore? They have a separate counter, thats all, but you can buy anything from beer to wine to scotch from those counters. For those who dont know, Fabmall is a chain of grocery stores. In fact, there is a large self service alcohol shop bang opposite IIM now. They home deliver too!

| Distinguished - BHPian ![]() | That's old news for us, there are 3 Petrol Pump Supermarkets in Delhi (All 3 are In & Out outlets of BP, one is owned by a very close friend of mine) and they are allowed to sell Beer & Breezers for the past couple of years. Plus, there is the Star Bazaar in Kailash colony which also sells Beer & Breezers. Nothing new, expcept these guys have good, courteous salesmen (people up here will tell you how that is a rarity) and actually chilled Beer! Good for us methinks!
