Whats the Best way to transport a car??

Just made a few calls to some shippers. The cost to transport a M800 from Gurgaon to Mumbai was quoted at Rs.8,500 by Agarwal Packers, and Rs.7,950/- by Leo shippers. These are the 2 agencies that appear to be trusted by fellow BHPian's.

Agarwal will deliver the car to your doorstep, however you will then have to pay octroi, as they truck it past the octroi post in Mumbai. They said it would take a maximum of 8-9 days.

Leo shippers state that they charge Rs.7000 for the shipping of the car, plus Rs.950 for an "escort" with the car. The escort picks up the car from gurgaon, drives it to the Maruti factory or wherever they load their cars, load it onto one of Maruti's car trailers. The car is then offloaded at Bhiwandi, outside the octroi limit, and driven the rest of the distance to your house. The total time taken is a maximum of 5 days.

Both stated that the standard cost does not include any sort of transit insurance for the car. However, it is offered at 1.5% of the cars value.

On the whole, it makes more sense to truck the car down here, as by driving the approx. 1400km's, you would use approx. 93 liters of fuel (estimated FE of 15 km/l) at an average of Rs.47 rupees/liters would equal Rs.4,386/- for fuel alone. Add to that about Rs.1000 in toll, another 2,000 for one nights hotel stay along with food enroute and wear and tear on the car, it may be cheaper to get it shipped down.

Just received my car from Delhi , used Aankur Cargo , cost me 7500 from Del to Pune excluding transit insurance. ( These guys areone of the many transporters for Maruti so their trucks go over the country )

Handed the car over to them on the 10th of Feb and received it on the 18th of Feb , they normally quote 5- 6 days , however was told the truck the car was in met with an accident somwhere near Surat and the truck was impounded since the person on the two wheeler involved died ( god bless his soul )

Car was received in good condition driven apprxo 3.5 kMS which is acceptable , no dents or any other sign signs of abuse besides being covered by dust including the interiors since they left one window down.

In the past ( in Aug) I used Allied Lemuir who in turn outsourced to Aankur Cargo.The experience offcourse was a lot better , they kept me updated on a daily basis on where the car was , received it after it was cleaned thoroughly etc . However paid 12500 plus 2% as transit insurance.

I have to say Allied offered more piece of mind , it was a pain folloing up with Ankur cargo directly . I had to call and keep track of the car , they also did not bother to update me about the accident etc

Would recommend you use someone reputed from a piec of mind perspective if cost is not too much of a concern..

It's recommended that you use Agarwal Movers. I've enquired about it and found out that the service is quite good.

Ok. To update this thread. I got the M800 shipped from Gurgaon to Mumbai by Agarwal.

They picked up that car in Gurgaon and drove it to their loading point. The car was loaded onto a closed car carrier along with some other brand new Maruti's being delivered. Rs.4,250 - half the total cost, was paid at this point. Copies of all papers were given, along with one set of keys.

It arrived in the outskirts of Mumbai 5 days later. I get a call from the person asking me to come to Panvel and pick up the car! I tell him that we have paid for a door to door service, so I am not going anywhere, and I expect the car to be delivered to my doorstep as agreed. A few minutes later, I get a call from the company HQ in Gurgaon asking me what the problem was. After I explain the situation, he tells me not to worry, I won't have to pick it up and wouldn't have to pay anything other than the agreed amount.

About 4 hours later, the car arrives at its destination. The car itself is filthy, smells and the front bumper is broken. They first denied that the bumper was broken by them, saying that it was given to them in that shape. However photographs taken just before the car was packed off in Gurgaon shows otherwise. They then laugh and say that a new bumper is just around Rs.800, so why make an issue. I explained that the cost of the bumper was not the point here. However, my Brother inlaw told me to forget about it, so I did and paid up the balance Rs.4,250 to the driver.

Total cost: Rs.8,500 (Half on pickup, half on delivery)

Best way to ship the car is to drive it yourself .. The last time I shipped my car from bombay it came filled with dust both inside and outside .. Luckily there were no exterior damages .. But given a chance I would never truck my car ever again ..

Though roads have improved but i would rather drive down than give on the trucks. I just drove down Delhi to Pune 2 days in a Marina with a night halt at Amadhabad. And my dad drove my Santro to Calcutta in 2 & 1/2 days as well with stops at Allahabad and Dhanbad. Mind you he is pushing 63 and loved his drive all the way.

Guys, if dealing with Agarwal packers be VERY careful. We had a very bad experience with them when my brother was moving from Bangalore to Pune back in 2004. He had 'enquired' from Agarwal about the moving costs and, when asked, gave a tentative moving date. He finally decided on another mover; however, on the 'tentative date', Agarwal movers people turned up at our home and demanded that we move or pay them Rs. 1,000 for their time being wasted (all they had done was arrive at our gate). Without any confirmation or advance, they decided that we had finalised with them and arrived at home when my mom was all alone and began threatening her. Finally after a couple of hours, just to make them leave, my mom had to give them Rs. 500/-. So, be very careful and dont give any address even if you do give them a tentative moving date.

Moving the car when one of the end points (either start or end) is Delhi or Chennai is easy. Thats mainly because lot of those car trailers leave from these two cities carrying Maruti and Santros to various parts of the country. Your car gets accomodated in those. In return journey they mostly come back empty so they are on the lookout for these deals. So either direction it is easy.

However, people who say need to move from Hyderabad to Kolkata or some such points have a problem. Normally you won't find a car trailer running between these cities so easily. If you book by Agrawal also they load the car in a normal truck. I have seen it myself. That can damage the car as the normal trucks are not really the ideal things to carry vehicles.

Hello All,
As some of you may know I had relocated to Gurgaon from Connecticut in October 2007 and I will be here till October 2008. Though, I could have a car and driver service from my company, I declined as I enjoy my independence and like driving. After great thought, I did not find it reasonable to buy a new or used car in India for the one year interim as I would lose too much money on resale.

However, I was ready to make an investment - a LR Defender and keep it in India for some off road adventures when I would take holidays to India over the next few years. However 4 months of searching has not yielded anything (Thanks to Irags - my defender p.i.m.p)

Anyway I digress - For the past 4 months I have been driving a battered 20 year old Maruti 800 (A car that was not being used by a relative) and though the V-8 in the car is a pleasure to drive, it has no AC. This means that when the Delhi Summer sets in a month, I will be, to put it mildly......TOAST.

So, I have decided that due to irag's ineptness in procuring a defender - , I will need to get a car that has some sort of cooling capabilities. This leaves me one choice - I have family in Jamshedpur (Jai Jharkhand!) and we have a bunch of cars in our garage. There is an old Faithful Cielo GLX circa 1998 in the stable which is due for replacement in the next few months upon the impending launch of the new Accord. I checked the car out this previous week and surprisingly, it's in pretty decent shape - everything runs - the AC cools well and it takes care of basic necessities. So now, I need to get the Cielo from Jamshedpur (Jai Jharkahand!) down (Or up - Geographically speaking) to Gurgaon.

I have 2 options:
1) Transport by Trailer: Rs. 15K plus octroi
2) Have one of our drivers in Jamshedpur drive it down - here is the math on that:
1287 kms to be driven at 6 kmpl - 214.5 Liters @ Rs.48 kmpl - Rs.10,296
Tolls - Rs. 2000
Driver lodging and food for 3 days - Rs. 2000
Driver Train Ticket Back - Rs.1000

Total cost Rs. 15K give or take a few hundred.

Considering the Cielo is a delicate car and at a delicate age - is it wise to get it driven down? It has 96K on the odo. Any other suggestions?

P.S. afterthought - Aren't used Cielos really really cheap - like 15K cheap? Better to just buy in delhi and then scrap?

P.P.S: Please do not PM me about shoe-horning a V-8 in the Maruti 800. It was sarcasm at it's weakest. The car is also referred to as the Twin Turbo / Ferrari / Billoo by other bhpians.

Octroi? What Octroi? you don't need to pay octroi in your personal goods.
As for the cost from Jharkhand, it should by around 12K for the Cielo, not 15K ask around.

Well the answer depends on which car it is that you drive :-). Here's a tip rally a group of interested folks from team-bhp from each leg of the journey who would be (IMHO) more than willing to rip your ride for one leg each :-)

Thanks tsk - I have someone researching this now - I thought 15K sounded steep as well.

Maybe I am getting confused with this octroi thing - I think the guy was trying to say that I will need to pay Haryana state tax (Road tax?) for getting the car in from a different state. Is this bull?

drive it. come from delhi to bombay chill out here for a day or two then head down south.
