1) Fiat Linea - Can't stop drooling over this Italian beauty. Wish it comes with 1.6/1.9 JTD mated to an Autobox and a better fit/finish (positioning into Altis D/Cruze territory. Just stopped short of writing Skoda Laura here )

2) Hyundai i20 - Convinced the average Indian buyer to shell out money for Premium Hatchback (where Fabia failed in its first innings)

3) ANHC - Been there for a decade and a huge list of owners (still growing) who swear by it

4) Ford Figo - A no-nonsense car that oozes practicality.Ford proved that killer pricing does not mean cutting down features. Personally, american cars were never on my list until Figo arrived.

5) Chevy Cruze - This one made into my list just for its amazing cockpit styled dash.

1) Mercedes W124. The last of those old tanks. Something you can't stop loving.

2) Skoda Octavia RS. 150 BHP. 200+ km/h. And that huge boot makes enough space for a good ICE setup.

3) Contessa. Again, royal. Would love to have this car in my garage one day.

4) Opel Astra. Another luxury car. Didn't set the sales charts on fire, but it was a good car to drive around in.

5) OHC Vtec 1.5. THE enthusiast car of the day. And still. Not many of todays cars can keep up to it.

Others would include all old school mercs, esteem, baleno, zen, standard 2000, and all those other underrated gems of the Indian Automobile Industry.

1) Toyota Innova: Great ride comfort and literally floats in highways. Engine seems to be well powered and doesnt struggle when switching on the AC. Sometimes it makes me difficult that it runs on diesel.
2) NHC: Good petrol vehicle with an amazing mileage
3) Old Lancer: Great comfort. The suspension is damn good. Can ride over a speed breaker without applying brakes.
3) Santro Xing: Even after 8 years, its still doing a great job. My dad is still using it and is in great shape.
4) Amby: The best car available couple of decades ago. I still remember the days when Amby used to rule the car market

Cannot determine the top 5 cars as I haven't driven them all. My choices are strictly based on "perception"
1. Swift - stylish, trendsetter
2. Nano - unique, one of a kind
3. ANHC - Class has to tell
4. Punto - The drive, the looks, the design!
5. Safari - The only vfm SUV, Better road presence than the Scorpio.

Hi,

all my rankings are selfish -from the drivers' point of view

1. Ambassador - learnt driving on that and can't but compare the delay in thrust to the 747 jumbo jet

2. Toyota qualis - still love the angle of the steering wheel

3. Ford Ikon - snug fit feeling to the driver

4. Ford Fiesta - the younger BMW

5. Santro Xing and Wagon R - for the height and visibility

Warm regards,
NagaSid

My choice is (not top 5 but top 10 )

1) M800 - It gave us the wheels
2) Nano - Promises to give wheels to the future
3) Indica V2 - Luxury, safety, VFM at a time when others were cramped, unsafe and not so VFM. (when new). Most VFM car even today in the age of expensive petrol. -First Indian Car.
4) Fiat Linea/ Punto - Droooooolllllll. Need I say more
5) Safari - First 'Real' SUV in India, design is still contemporary.
6) Siena Weekend - First 'Butch' crossover.
7) Toyota Qualis/ Innova - Ever heard of a company making money on one model only?
8) Tata Ace - Introduced the mini CV as a mass market
9) Honda ANHC, OHC - Design marvels.
10) Esteem/Lancer/ Baleno - Indian Rally scene.

For me the Top 5 cars would be
1. Old Maruti Zen (MH 410) - Light and zippy
2. Chevrolet Cruze - Awesome package, Unlimited power
3. Ford Figo - For telling us American and VFM can be said in one sentence
4. Jeep - Mahindra - For its ability to push on even with tons of people on the bad roads of yester years. and for still pushing rural India on.
5. Honda Civic - for futuristic instrument cluster and sports car in a family sedan package.

1. Old Zen- Quick, composed and fun to drive.
2. Swift - Arguably the best offering from Suzuki stable.
3. Vento D - It is a torque monster with a wide power band (unlike normal diesels). Decent handling and ample space too.
4. Laura 1.8 Tsi. Blows the competition away. Cruze and Civic are not as fun to drive.
5. And the Fortuner in the SUV category.

1. M 800 - for breaking the monopoly of the mighty Amby and smashing it. Maruti showed that cheap cars can be reliable too and M 800 was the mighty opening move
2. Zen - light steering , sprightly yet frugal drive - the original one was my fav. Loved the "steering feedback" when zipping on the highway in the midst of crosswinds
3. Honda City - All the various variants have been my dream car at some point or the other in my life (though never got to own one!) . Vtec was the first sedan available which bragged 100 bhp and it got me dreaming, was a couple of days away from plonking my money on ANHC till Vento spoilt the dream buy !
4. Swift - Fun to drive is personified by the car, the best car from the Maruti stable and one of the best value propositions on the Indian roads. Its monthly numbers aptly reflects its popularity
5. Jonga Jeep - I have seen few vehicles as amazing as it , seen it run on crappy fuel ! Monsters bad roads , lazily trundles along hilly roads . I am at a loss to categorise the engine .. diesel , kerosene , adulterated oil engine - it can run on literally anything I suppose

1.MAHINDRA BOLERO - Largest selling compact SUV
2.MARUTI 800 - LEGEND
3.TOYOTA INNOVA - Redefined People carrier segment
4.GRANDE PUNTO - Absolutely sexy
5.INDICA - Redifined small car

NANO does have the potential, but i guess it will be evident once we have a diesel and CVT variant in market.
