Yeah, very true, we are ranked very high, in fact higher than Australia though in a different area.

Navdeep mate,

So in a situation like that - what does Chapell do ? His captain wants to retain a player who hasnt played a decent innings in quite a long while and he has an ex-captain who is in reasonably good form , opening the batting. Now Sachin wants to open the batting too - so Greg asks him to drop down the order (as it is Sachin was not performing miracles opening) . If Sachin really cared for the team and wanted to help , being the senior pro he should have really supported Greg and TRIED to score runs. But we all saw what happened.

Ultimately it's a team game and the team is above all - if the captain cannot understand , Sachin being the senior most player should have helped. He did not !

Are you sure he has not TRIED .. well we cannot be so sure when we all have not played one Intern. ODI.

I am neither in favor of Sachin nor against him. Just trying to think logically.

navdeep, the commitment levels are quite obvious, player to player, match to match. You dont have to be an international player to see that. How many times have we seen him hang around & dab those singles when he was on 92 N.O with few overs to go.

there are many instances when he got out in 90's and 40's just push the scoring rate ( now don't ask me *when* )

But yes I do feel Sachin has failed on big occassions, when India is playing a crunch game no matter he was in good form.

One of the worst examples of Sachin not pushing up the scoring rate when required was his 240-odd not out in a test match in Australia. India was already ahead of Aus in the first innings on the fourth day and the need of the hour was quick scoring so that we could declare; but Sachin continued at a leisurely pace of less than 3 an over. It was this innings which Ian Chappell called "ugly" in his recent article asking for Sachin's retirement. When asked why he didn't increase his scoring rate despite getting past 200, Sachin replied "I did not want to get out". Sachin wanted a big score apparently because Dravid and Laxman already had gotten big scores and probably wanted to come back not out so that his average does not suffer in comparison to those of Dravid and Laxman.

The BCCI, in its recent crackdown on endorsements, has, I believe, banned performance clauses in these. Suppose, for example, the performance clause says that the player has to score X runs in order to retain the endorsement. Then obviously the player will try to score that, never mind the scoring rate required by the team. This is suspected to be one of the reasons for the slow scoring rate of our seniors in the WC, which resulted in Greg Chappell commenting that they are playing for endorsements rather than for the team.

Was doing some filtering of sachin's records in Cricinfo.com - The Home of Cricket to see how many times he was out in the nineties (91-99) and i stumbled upon some very interesting facts. He has been dismissed 9 times in his nineties out of which 8 times have been against pak or SL (4 each). And 93 seems to be his favorite number to get out to.

91 4 stumped 2 * L ChT (UAE) 1 v Eng in UAE 1997/98 at Sharjah (d/n) [1259]
95 2 bowled 2 W SJI Cup F1 v Pak in BD 1997/98 at Dhaka [1276]
93 1 bowled 2 * L C&U Ser. 7 v Pak in Aus 1999/00 at Hobart [1543]
93 2 caught 2 L 5th ODI v SA in Ind 1999/00 at Nagpur [1576]
93 2 caught 2 L Asia Cup 3 v SL in BD 2000 at Dhaka (d/n) [1598]
98 1 caught 2 W World Cup 36 v Pak in SA 2002/03 at Centurion [1975]
97 1 caught wk 1 W World Cup Su v SL in SA 2002/03 at Johannesburg [1985]
93 2 caught wk 1 W 1st ODI v SL in Ind 2005/06 at Nagpur [2286]
95 2 caught 2 W 3rd ODI v Pak in Pak 2005/06 at Lahore (d/n) [2329]

well, whatdya know ?

I am sorry for going completely oof topic, but i couldn't resist pulling one on tendlya.

Remember Multan test, Sachin on 194 and Dravid declared & won the test? He was asked to increase his scoring & get his 200. Stragenly he didn't and later cribbed to media of not being allowed to complete 200.

John Wright reveals here: 'Sachin felt let down by Dravid's declaration'- Indian Cricket-News-Sections-Indiatimes - Cricket

I feel this is one of the blacks spots in his rather illustrious career.

what a day for South Africa, 356/4 in 50 overs. Credit should be to Kallis for repairing the damage in first 10 overs (36 runs/1w). boucher, gibbs and devillers thrashed wi bowlers

WI is out of world cup. SA chances are brighter to enter in semis. I would like to see SA vs Aus in final.

Navdeep, if ya see the scheduling .... ur wish of seeing a SA vs Aus final can not happen -- as in the semis Team No 1 ( Aus ) plays Team No 4 ( most likely SA ) abd Team No 2 plays Team No 3 ( most likely Nz vs SL ) !!!

So chances are the final wud be a Aus vs Nz -- and then the black caps will hammer them once again ;-)

Yes I missed the point. I am not sure SA will be able to move to 3rd position.
