Its the intent that is at fault here. To save Prasar Bharati ? Why do we need Prasar Bharathi ? Tax collection is so inefficient and corrupt. They need to look into how they can increase the collections instead. This government is unraveling its foolishness very often.

Default Pathetic!

I think are government is trying to make money from all the possible ways, and this money is collected because they are unable to pay salary to prasar bharathi employess... horrible

to top it all its not onetime fee, it will be a recurring fee every year. these people are making our(common man's) life horrible.

This system was also in practice in India a couple of decades back when we had to pay license fees for RADIOS (yes, Radios - each radio had a license sticker behind it for which you paid Rs.15 per year) and TVs.

If they decided then that the practice was not enforceable and was too cumbersome a way to collect revenues, why do they think otherwise 20 years down the line?

This is typical Congress socialist mentality. Tax people for watching TV, tax people for using an ATM machine, tax people for every damn thing.

The CP wont spare any chance to fleece the "rich" people who can "afford" colour TV.

Almost every slum in Mumbai has a colour TV as well. Are they going to tax their vote banks? I seriously doubt it.

I dont see why CPM/CPI will oppose this move. They will infact recommend that such an amount is also charged for other "luxury" items like air conditioner, fridge, music system (say, beyond 50W RMS!), washing machine, microwave etc. Afterall, all these equipments do drain our dams and coal/uranium reserves, right?

We are going back to the "license raj" era. Its pathetic to see that in order to cover for the inefficiencies of a useless govt dept, we have to pay more. As if other taxes are not anough.

I think it would have been more easier to implement a one time surcharge on TV sales rather than this cumbersome exercise which is extremely difficult to implement and also prone to corruption and harassment from "TV inspectors". I suspect that these guys will be given power to barge in and inspect our house for "unlicensed/illegal" TV sets.

Nope none of the slum dewelling have Color TV. They do not have electricity too.
What? You have seen that in slums?
Well you must have taken drugs and were hallucinating.
What? A sting operation has proved that?
The Tapes are doctored and now we will send a police car every night at 2am to harass the producer of the show and threaten his wife and kids.

Yeah, for this the govt should give us some discounts or subsidies! They can actually make the rule such that if we watch DD more than all other channels put together in one month, your license charge will be waived off. Of course its more difficult to implement. But thats what they want, right?

In that case, i would need to leave my TV switched on every day while we are away at work. There is no other way, we would be able to manage this target. But, wait a minute!! That would mean more usage of electricity, and i also need to pay tax on that !!

Basically UK govt. has database of all addresses (appx. 26 million) - and they just then scan which address didn't apply for a license. So, tracking unpaid licenses are quite easy for them!

But I wonder how Indian govt. is going to manage license evaders. AFAIK, Radio & TV licenses were scapped in India around 1980.

Our GOVT is run by jokers. Is there any doubt on this!!! Politics is 1 of the most coveted jobs where you need no education.

Imagine the following in the future...

1. Govt puts book tax on any new book you buy to pay salary to govt school teachers.
2. Cell phone tax when you buy a new cellphone to pay for MTNL/BSNL employees.
3.Clothes tax when you buy new clothes to pay handloom employees.

Is the common responsible for all the losses the govt suffers.
Does it share any profits in tax collection that it burdens us with losses?
