It isnt 40GBPS.

It is 40Gbps. Gigabits per second.

Which is 5GBps or 5 Gigabytes per second.

Which means, she'll take abt 2 or 3 seconds to download a high- definition movie :P

That is if the movie is on a server just around the corner & no one else is accessing it. Technically, she could have just the same speed for many of the downloads.

So a guy working at Cisco got this for his mother to show off. His quote "I want to show that there are other methods than the old fashioned ways such as copper wires and radio, which lack the possibilities that fibre has"

Didn't everyone know this method for a really loooooong time now ?

It does not necessarily need you to have the physical write speed to match with the download/read speed. That will always be slower. There are nice caching softwares available to do that for you. In fact when you cut a CD the something similar happens. If your writer is blazing fast it may miss a beat as the data being made available will be slower to come. This in turn may corrupt the CD. So you have something called a buffer available. Again, to prevent a buffer overrun the writing softwares provide another layer of buffering/caching on top of it.

whatcanthisbe - I wonder what you would end up with if you manage to cut a speed like that
