Best place to settle in india

Hi all,

I am wondering what you will consider as the place to settle, post retirement.

the points to consider are:

1. environment: should be good to live in. no pollution, clean air, water, sky.
2. scenic: beaches, mountains, heritage etc.
3. political/criminal/religious/mafia/terrorist interference: the less, the better.
4. educational facilities for kids. at some point they are going to fly away anyway. still...
5. access to urban facilities: malls, medical emergencies.
6. local support for immigrants.

Please add your thoughts and points. apologies if i missed anybody's place . we can add more options as and when we get to them.

IMHO the best place to settle down is Mysore

1. Clean air, no pollution. Not much traffic like Bangalore
2. Mountains, Heritage place.
3. Little Political, nothing to affect normal life.
4. One of the best in India.
5. Yes.
6. All kannadigas are very tolerant to immigrants.

Natural calamities: None so far

I second that. But not for long. Agent Smith's line in The Matrix comes to mind:

"......You move to an area and you multiply, and multiply until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet..."

First it was Bangalore. Mysore's next. No offence meant to anyone here. These are just my sentiments as a Mysorean.

Being from Calcutta, I've voted for West Bengal.
1. Environment - Its hot and if you stay in Calcutta, its polluted. But, outskirts are quite okay.
2. Scenic - There are beaches and mountains in West Bengal. Good share of heritage too.
3. Crime rate is lower than some metros. Political interference means general strikes called several times a year.
4. Education - Lots of good schools and colleges in Calcutta.
5. Urban facilities - Adequate in city.
6. What do you exactly mean by support for immigrants?
7. Natural calamities - Floods.

I'm talking about Calcutta (Kolkata) and not the smaller towns.
Add to this pubs/clubs open till 5 a.m.cheers:

No place is flaw less. I love Calcutta no matter what

IMO all these factors dont really matter.

2 problems, we all have careers and we have families (extended, not immediate). The balance between these 2 things will decide where you will realistically settle down.

IIRC, Mysore was the most volatile area during the recent Cauvery problem.

Chandigarh.
1. Reasonably safe from Natural clamities
2. Cheap to live with active suburbs
3. Accesible to hills(himachal is next door)
4. Delhi is just 4 hours away(International airport)
5. Good education(One of the best schools, and also great engineering/Medical and MBA college). Also has one of the biggest univs of north India, Punjab University
6. No traffic hassals
7. Great tourist places inside city(Lake, Rock garden, Rose garden...)

Now only if some big MNCs opened up here, I would move at first opportunity!

let's stick to the question please.

"I am wondering what you will consider as the place to settle, post retirement."

I don't want to see this thread getting locked by mods.

I voted for west coast, because i think they are suitable in all aspects.

TSK, good points there. Past 1984, i have never been able to think of punjab as a destination. I should.
