Default The Count Down to Onam is On

Onam, the festival of Kerala is just round the corner.

Onam Festival falls during the Malayali month of Chingam and marks the homecoming of legendary King Mahabali. Carnival of Onam lasts for ten days and brings out the best of Kerala culture and tradition. Intricately decorated Pookalam, ambrosial Onasadya, breathtaking Snake Boat Race and exotic Kaikottikali dance are some of the most remarkable features. In 1961 Onam qas declared as a national festival.

According to the legend, Kerala witnessed its golden era during the reign of King Mahabali. Everybody in the state was happy and prosperous and the king was highly regarded by his subjects. He was that much highly regarded among the subjects that even the Gods under Indra became jealous of Mahabali, they approached Mahavishnu claiming that Mahabali is now equivalent to an Indra. Since a world with two Indras represents imbalance, Mahavishnu assumed the form of a dwarf: the Vamana avatar had tricked him to Pathalam, the Under-the-ground world. However, as Mahabali is equal to an Indra, he is to wait until the next Yuga where he would be the Indra. In the meantime, with the grace of Mahavishnu, Mahabali visits his people on an annual basis. It is this visit of Mahabali that is celebrated as Onam every year. People including children celebrate the festival in a grand way and impress upon their dear King that they are happy and wish him well.

I am attaching some pookkalams from an amateur competition.

Rajeev,

You made me go back in time during the college days when Onam used to be one of the most awaited festivals of the year. Had so many mallu friends and it had become a ritual to go to their homes for the Onam feast. On Onam day we were compulsarily taken to the local Ayyapa temple for the morning ritual and then head home to those mouth watering dishes. God we used to so stuff ourselves with all those goodies and have a blast.

I never had an oppurtunity to visit the God's land during Onam, its one of the things to do before I die.

Nice thread Rajeev. The best part of Onam for me is the food (Ona sadya). Usually, the women folks will be kicked out of kitchen and we (me + father) take over.
There will be around 10 curries and it ends with traditional payasam (around 2 or 3). The last 2 days we slept at around 1 am as we were busy frying banana chips. It also acts as a family reunion day for most of the mallus.

Wishing you all BHPians a happy onam.

Happy Onam to all Keralites !

Could someone please give more details? Tomorrow is the main day, I guess. I have heard it is spread over 10 days. So, the 10-days celebration comes to an end tomorrow, or does the celebration start tomorrow and continue for 10-days?

@Rajeev, Thanks for a quick walk-through on why Onam is celebrated.

This year I will be celebrating my first official Onam. (I got married this year and my wife is from Kerala). I’ve heard a lot about Onam from childhood but pretty much excited this year as I would be a part of this celebration with family.

Sadhya, payasam, banana chips… yummy… and in addition feast for eyes as well with flower decoration and soothing light from deepam all over. I love this.

Onam - falls on Saravana day in the month of Leo ("chingam" - variant of "simha"). The festival is four days, and "thiruvonam" - "sravana" is the 2nd day.. "Hasta" day ("attam - അത്തം") marks beginning of Onam celebrations. Hasta to sravana is 10 days. I guess you are referring to this period. Onam celebrations continue for another 2 days. But it is the first two days which are most important.

Corrections welcome.

* No offence meant - Onam happens to be the "spending time" for us Malayalees.
