31 Contessa's Auctioned
Car cartel benefits from government fall!
Rakesh Prakash | TNN
Bangalore: One group which keenly followed the recent bizarre political drama in the state was the car cartel. Because it gets to make a quick buck every time a government changes as at least 100 new cars are bought and old ones auctioned. This time too the cartel rode on profits by buying used-government vehicles at dirtcheap prices during auction and re-selling them in open market at higher prices.
A broker explained: “When a minister loses office, he ceases to use the car designated to him. The minister who succeeds him refuses to use the old car for superstitious reasons and prefers a latest model. As a result, old cars are scrapped and put on sale.’’
Just two days after chief minister B S Yeddyurappa relinquished office following the political tamasha, 41 cars including a Ford Ikon were auctioned. While the 2001-model Ikon was auctioned for Rs 1.2 lakh as against the current market price of around Rs 2.25 lakh, 31 Contessas were auctioned for paltry sums ranging anywhere from Rs 15,000-25,000 each. Eight sturdy Ambassador cars were also disposed of for meagre sums.
In fact, the state government’s department of administrative reforms and personnel (state protocol wing) has auctioned about 125 vehicles in the last one year. “The brokers either dismantle the cars and sell the parts in the scrap market at Shivajinagar in Bangalore or sell the cars to tour operators in North Karnataka to run as taxis. In the case of Contessa cars, the vehicle’s engine can be refitted into Ambassador cars,’’ sources said.
This fleet of Contessa and Ambassador cars were retired early after H D Kumaraswamy took over as CM because his ministers preferred high-end cars. “New ministers want brand new cars; the old ones have to be sold,’’ DPAR officials maintained.
The Irony is that i have been looking for a good contessa for some time now and I did not even know about the auction till it finally happened

Sounds good to 2nd hand buyers. 25K is really good to get a Conti and mod it!!
slightly OT here,... but can we have more information on how and when auctions are organised by the consulates?
anyone with first person experiences in buying vehicles from such auctions... or is there a thread already for this?

That is the problem, nobody will get to know when the auction takes place, most of the cars will be taken up by the car dealers who have connection within the govt.

The standard policy is that the auction/Tender would have to be advertised in a "Leading Publication" .....but this time I did not see any of this happening
now if i plan to go to the dealers who bought this they would surely want to make some profit before they sell it ( that is going to hurt ) :(
