Default IPL impact?

A lot being said about dedication of players, the toll IPL will take on players etc, what is really strange is that sehwag is out of the World 20-20 with an injury being stated as the reason. I think its a clever ploy to keep him out, looking at his erratic form without really causing a uproar in the media, team etc( as he is a senior player and his presence itself is an impact)
His record has been very bad and not a single match did he perform well enough to get the team to win the match. Only one score was worth mentioning but that too was not without a chance to get out cheap.
While his record in tests is unparallelled, clearly in this format of the game, he has not found his touch and good that younger and more deserving players have found a chance.
As for the IPL in itself, well not sure about the players but those who run the show are surely not honest. Overall with only cricket hogging all the glory and the money, i do not see any other sport putting india on the globe in the near future( except the odd billiards champion that we seem to bring out of nowhere). That is the sad part of sports in our nation and the IPL amplifies it big time

I wonder if the IPL will adversely affect students studying for their exams. Especially because there are so many matches spread out over 2 months.

I feel, from what has transpired in other scams, is that, the other big fish want a piece of the pie Mr. Modi is cooking hence the plot to oust him. As it is people have a fair idea of what is what in the last 3 years. Remember the outster of Jagmohan Dalmiya ? But, my gut feel is that Modi will threaten to spill the beans and pull everyone on the floor if pressured enough. So the pressure will have to built enough to bend and not break. I feel Modi will still be at the top but his earnings won't. Mandavli (compromise) with everyone. My guess purely.

Well prince Very truely put. I am sure that there will be some ridiculous looking compromise which will pop up. The tehelka link has some script straight out of movies written as a fact!

@Gansan: Betting happens in all the cricket matches. Even on the toss and weather. Its not only on IPL. Its legal in majority of the countries and earns revenue for the government. EPL has legal betting websites. Fixing and betting are do not always go hand in hand

I know that! This is IPL, betting is not legal here but controlled from Dubai by you know who, and those who run the IPL are not clean as snow either so fixing can't be ruled out.

For those who think Betting and Fixing are 2 different things. You are MISTAKEN.
-Betting is a part of Fixing.

For those who think Big players are not involved in fixing. does that make sense?

And they did it without depending on Sachin.

Hopefully, Sachin will be fit to play the finals. He is having 5 stiches for the split webbing.

I wish the Chargers make it to the finals and then I will have my two favorite teams in the final. My loyalties will be torn between Sachin and Deccan, but it will be good to be in a win-win situation.

Will I able to support the Indians against the Chargers if Sachin's not out on the field due to injury? I will have to find that out on match-day.

I so hope that one day Indians will be able to see beyond socialism.

(1) @Tax subsidies for IPL: All businesses get these. Businesses generate employment and economic activity. That is the reason. The IPL directly and indirectly employes lakhs. Just go to a stadium to see it for yourself. The parking lot guys, the innumerous merchandise vendors, the face painters, the coke/pepsi/snacks sellers, the groundsmen, other logistics guys, TV crews, AD agencies...... the list is endless.
(2) @Matches being fixed: Please go and educate yourselves. Watch a few documentaries on the Cronje saga. Matches were not fixed in the way people believe they were. No one was told "at 43.2 overs, you'll get a catch, drop it" , "at 24.3, mr X. will bowl to you, get out" or "at 6.1 overs, bowl him a bad ball. He'll hit you for a six"
Yes bookies were involved. One match that Gibbs was supposed to underperform in, he hit a 100 (or was it an 80?) in that. Another instance was the SA, England test match where both the teams declared the first innings. Bookies can have an influence on a match, but the results cannot be fixed to the extent some people claim they can be. Anyone who has played any cricket, can confirm this.
(3) @Money laundering: First the government should clean its own house. Quattrochi, Madhu Koda, the Telecom spectrum (Raja) Scam....the list is endless. The 2009 general elections saw more than 2b $ being spent. No one bothered, then, to explain where this money comes from.
(4) @ IPL not being cricket: Don't like it, don't watch it.

My personal rant: It is one the best things that has happened in the country over the last 10 years. It generates a lot of economic activity, has given the lesser players (who might never make it to the national team) a platform, and a lot of these lesser players are now making the money that they deserved to make. This will simply encourage more people to play cricket. A lot of cricketers used to quit when they were 14/15 because they realized that they weren't good enough to be in the national team, and should resort to other careers to put bread on the table. A lot of these kids, now, would continue to play because they have seen how a less than extraordinary cricketer can make cricket a full time proffession.

My only concern: This has more to do with T20 than the IPL. The concern is that we might, in the future, be producing more Yusuf Pathans than the Cheteshwar Pujaras.

(1) No, betting can exist without fixing and in a lot of countries it does.
(2) Yes, betting and fixing can coexist. So can a democracy and corruption. Doesn't mean that corruption is a fundamental component of democracies.
(3) Before condescendingly telling people that "they are mistaken", please make sure your own statements don't show case your double digit IQ.
