Earlier I used to hear a lot about Mechanical Engineering. That this is the evergreen field and will not go down like the IT world etc.

Now, as I am about to complete my graduation in ME, none of the companies related seem interested in us freshers. I don't want to end-up in IT. A strict NO from my side. What alternatives do I have?

I so want to work in Automobile sector but as of now it looks like none of the firms pick freshers!!

But they do and people end up being maintenance specialists with the responsibility of ensuring that all assembly lines are up and running. Apart from this not much scope in India, of course with time the designation and pay-scale will increase but the essence of the job will be more or less the same. You could also go join one of the earth moving machinery majors and who knows could end up heading their service network. Yay what fun

If you seriously want to get in to automotive field as in on the design, R&D side etc. etc. you need a degree from one of the universities in Germany, Austria, France or the UK and then get in to either one of the major motor car manufacturers or one of the component manufacturers or some of the independent design companies as that is where the real cutting edge design work is done. If you luck out you could end up joining one of the F1 teams, remember UK above, that is where a majority of them are based. You could do this in the US too and then the field will be wider, what with a lot of earth moving, industrial heavy mobile machinery, aviation and defense industry too coming in to play. Do some research and you will see a clear pattern which identifies universities from where the auto majors in EU and US traditionally pick up engineers. You could plan to do your masters there.

In India the one company that comes to mind is Cosworth India Pvt. Ltd. They have a new(ish) set up in Poona and they just might be the only bet who will not turn in to a copy and paste component manufacturing line. Cummins, also based in Poona can be another great prospect. Few years ago they were woking on some very interesting projects to develop engines for the defense forces. Basically a cut and paste from designs out of their US mothership but with a lot of Indian tadka. I am sure, currently too they will have something interesting going on. Apart from these there are many other MNC component manufacturers here such as Delphi, Bosch, Federal Mogul and others like AVL who do engine / engine design analysis etc and any of these could be stepping stones to better opportunities in the field. Coming back to the Indian auto industry, Mahindra could be Nirvana country for you if you can get in. It is a very dynamic organisation and is scaling up in almost all verticals. This ensures that a lot of opportunities will spring up in-house in the near future.

If this is in Bangalore, then one of my friends would be interested. But he has a senior profile having 8+ years of experience. He is currently put up in Delhi and wants to relocate to Bangalore.

PS: I don't think anyone can PM you yet because you are still a "Newbie". Please PM me your email ID where I can send you his resume. Which company is this by the way?

Yes, this is Bangalore. Some of the profiles have openings for senior people (upto 12 yrs. of exp). Unfortunately (I just realized that) due to being a "Newbie" I am not able to PM you as well, the email options are not active for me. Is there any other way of sharing information? Else you can email the resume on "ashgeek57@gmail.com" (Mods - Please share the email ID above to Oxy, if there's a better way than directly posting it)

That was a long and brief counselling. Thank you very much for the guidance sir.

I have been told by many of the seniors to complete higher studies and then aim at the biggies. I am planning to join automotive universities in either Germany or U.K. As of now, have already missed the dates of major exams like GRE. Also, I want to be at the ground for one year at least. To understand the know-how and then take a step forward. I am sure there is atleast one place for me in the automotive firm.

Mahindra is surely a cut-above other Indian manufactures. Getting there is quite a task I guess. I was going through Mr. Pawan Goenka's interview in some magazine where he mentioned picking the 'cream' from Top-30 colleges in India. Forget top 30, my college is not even in the Top-50s.

With all due respect, I partially agree with you. I am working in Automotive industry for several years now and there are ample opportunities in this field NOW. Elaborated below.

@ Shivanik - First of all Please don't lose heart. While the job market is dominated by IT industry there are still decent career options in core engineering.

From your brief note, you have mentioned you are ME in Mechanical and want to be automobile sector - There is a thin line between automobile and automotive industry sectors. I am not very sure on the career aspects in the automobile sector - typically I can think of, as Khoj mentioned, the options are service, maintenance, sales or after sales kind of stuffs.

I can vouch for Automotive Sector career profile. If you are interested you can opt to be on the product development side of automotive industry. Every OEM, now-a-days is opening its R&D center in India. To name a few, present requirements are in Volkswagen (Pune), Renault-Nissan (Chennai), GM (Bangalore), Ford (Chennai), Mercedes (Pune & Bangalore), Daimler (Chennai), Peugeot (Pune), Volvo (Bangalore) and so on. Few months back Volvo had gone for an off campus drive specifically for freshers. The career growth is almost similar to the IT (I meant position and portfolio wise, But not package wise which is a bit difficult in core engineering). But due to sudden need of resources and lack of it has actually pushed the package also to a higher side.

Nevertheless, If you have an option, Doing a PhD overseas is definitely worth.

I am working with a company which supports many Global OEM's in their engineering (R&D and Product Development) activities.

Please let me know if I can be of any help to you.
