Question Bluetooth headset + driving illegal? Yup, details on pg. 4

Sometime back, a traffic cop caught me talking on the mobile while driving(a one-off case, usually I don't answer calls while driving), and he promptly cut a challan for Rs.400/- :(

But, sometimes you need to answer urgent calls, so I thought I will get a Bluetooth headset to solve this problem, but the question is - is it legal? or still against the law?

finneyp, Since you are a Fiat fan, get a Blue & Me system retrofitted on your Palio . You have steering wheel controls for making/receiving calls too and it can also play the voice over the car speakers.

It might depend on state. It is illegal in Maharashtra.

Thanks Spadival! Wish I could do that!
I am not sure if it is possible to retrofit Blue&Me onto Palio!

Thanks Netfreak for the link & info!
I guess it should be illegal across the country then.

I have heard about people being challaned in Delhi for talking on blue tooth devices while driving.

Similar question, is it illegal to talk on mobile / bluetooth while I am waiting at a Red signal ?

It is illegal to talk on a mobile phone, wired headset, wireless headset when you are driving. (red signal or green signal, doesn't matter).

The mobile has to be switched off when you are driving. Thats the law.

It is illegal, finneyp. The fine is costlier in Madras.

Thanks NC & Hrag for the confirmation!

Hrag, you paid Rs.1100 fine in Chennai, that was too much!
Bangalore is cheaper atleast on the traffic fines!

Depends on which section you are charged under. Let me find the receipt for that. Section 184 for Rough / Rash / Negligent driving - Rs. 1000
Don't remember the other section right now.

I keep my phone(s) on silent while driving now. A switched off official phone will lead to a hundred escalation mails

I forgot to add - I generally talk on bluetooth when I am driving. I hate it when I am alone, so am on the phone with someone.

Thank fully never been challaned. Not even when I was pulled over for a routine check and I got out of the car with the bluetooth in my ear.

It is definitely illegal. I was stopped in delhi by a cop while talking on bluetooth a month back. He told me its illegal all over country. Was giving me a challan of around 500 but convinced him i am a first time offender and because the guy was also a punjabi got out without it. Does anyone knows if its the right amount of challan for the offence in delhi and NCR?

I know slightly but does anyone knows what is the Challan for Dark tinted sunfilms in delhi?

Yes it's illegal.

You can reduce the chances of being caught by wearing the headset on your left ear instead of the right one.
