That is a great start, but only works for 7 offices. Hope it covers the nation soon.

Does anyone working in Bangalore been able to check the balance?

I get a wrong employer code message for the PF numbers of the 3 companies that I have worked for. The first one I am yet to withdraw. The second one is in the process of transfer to 3rd company. The present company PF number also does not seem to work.

The site allows for enquiry of PF accounts starting with BG/BNG/ .. only. So if a person's PF account has a different series, then it will not work.
Eg: my PF a/c starts with KN/BG/.. and I am not able to get the balance.

@neonDaytona - same problem.
@Gaddiwale, just try in a minute or two, and it will work

It works for KN/BN series. I tried and could register my mobile.. I just left the last but one text box/field blank. The worse thing was i received SMS after 30 minutes and it had updates only till March 2010 !!!
Crazy they said they have automated and still looks like its sending out information updated only till the time when you received your last statement !!

However I could not register my old two PF accounts as it said its invalid !
I am not expecting too much from this organization though...

I checked mine and it was worse. PF balance was showing a very low amount and the record updates were only till 31-Mar-2007. Looks like there is still a very long way to go..

Hi Guys

Please tell the truth and validity regarding this link for PF withdrawal

What is the Tax treatment of Provident Fund? - iTrust

In case a employee withdraws PF before 5 yrs of completion, then the amount is taxable.. Which amount the amount which a employee claimed (PF contribution) for tax deductions ?
  1. Any tax concession (e.g. 80C) availed by assesses for contribution to RPF shall now be withdrawn.
Which means technically, that the employer contribution and interest earned is not taxable. & "EPF savings are not taxable under the EPF Act of 1952"

Thanks
Rahul

Employer's contribution + Interest is also taxed and added to income for the year of withdrawal.

Same page says:

If none of the above conditions are satisfied then:
  1. The amount not taxed earlier shall be taxed in the same manner as URPF, given below.
  2. URPF is taxed as follows:
Employer's Contribution and interest there on: Taxable as Salary Income.
Employee's own Contribution : It is not taxable.
Interest on employee's contribution: Taxable as income from other sources.

So one has to pay tax in the year that he withdraws the PF? Can't he invest the same again in PPF and save on tax? (just blabbering)

This is a new EPFO portal that launched this month. However, though it shows Bangalore as one of cities, it seems like only one of the PF offices in Bangalore is actually included, see below to know why I'm saying this.
EDIT:When I tried with my PF account on this site, I did not get a response (SMS)!

The one account that you are yet to withdraw - As per the latest notification from EPFO this year, if it has been lying dormant for more than 3 years it will stop earning interest and will be moved to EPFO's suspense account. Does make sense to follow up and have it transferred/withdrawn (transfer is the better option since it will enhance your PF corpus)

For the folks in Bangalore, try this one (it will show balance as of March 2010)
Employee Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), Bangalore
Select the office that holds your PF account - check with your finance/payroll department if you don't know (mine is KRPURAM).
Now you will understand why I’m saying KR Puram and Bangalore may be different from PF office’s perspective - you can see multiple offices for Bangalore city including one called Bangalore !
Refer your PF account number in the format KN/BN/xyz/abc to enter following:
a)Enter xyz as establishment code
b)Enter abc as employee #

Hope this helps.

@NPV, Thanks.

That was one step closer. It identifies company name correctly. But beyond that, says data not available/found.

:(

If it had worked, I would have taken it as a bonus. And at least one way better than the co I work for

Right now, I am contemplating going to the PF office. Not alone, but with a govt employee (my cousin) for company.

I would advise to file an application under RTI Act 2005 in the respective PF office. It will allow you to get a quick reply from the PF department. Any query related to your PF account can be done using the RTI application like status of PF withdrawal, month wise employee and employer contribution in the PF account etc. etc.

I was waiting for 3 months and also filed on-line grievance on the PF portal but they never bothered to even pick up the phones given at the time of filing the grievance. Then I filed RTI application and the very next day I got a call from the PIO in PO office. He literally said Sorry for the delay in getting the withdarwal. He got the Cheque made within 2 hours and again called me up for the confirmation with the cheque amount and cheque number. Money got transferred within 4-5 working days. I also got the reply of my RTI application in which there was a detailed breakup (year wise) of the employer contribution within 15 days.

This is how the PF department worked in my case!

RTI is very effective, if used properly!

Cheers!
