Docs,

Need advice regarding hamstring pain.

I have severe hamstring pain in my right leg in the IT band (Glutes to the top of the calf). I can't put any weight on the right leg, without sharp pain getting triggered. I'm not sure how it all started --I guess a month ago, I did some exercise wrong or maybe it was because of my seating position while driving. It was mild. Used to trouble only in the mornings after the office drive, and then it eased itself as the day progressed. It started to disappear when I decided to go for a long drive which made things bad- sharp pains after I walk for about 10-15 mins and then I had to rest to regain the ability.

I consulted a physiotherapist. She used some electrical massage machine which made the pain go away momentarily and made me do some stretches. I'm not sure if it was right or wrong, but it made the pain worse since that day. I can't walk without wincing in pain. I'm undergoing RICE at home since 5 days. Things are only marginally better than the first day- for instance, I was not able to sit on the first day, but now I can with a support.

The physiotherapist said it will take some time. I'm willing to wait it out and RICE it day in day out, but how can I ascertain that it is not a grade 3 injury? Right now, the only indication that it is not is that there is no bruising or swelling on the area. How should I proceed further?

Thanks in advance,
Sanjay

Optical rant by-the-way update ...

They made good single-vision computer glasses. And the eye doc is treating me for viral eye infection.

I can relate to your experience. I spend at least 8 hours before the computer monitors everyday. I started with 14'' monitors about a decade ago, then 15'' - 17'' and now at 22'' monitor. If I have to work with Laptop or iPad, then I use a reading glass. It is something I picked up from Titan Eye care for about Rs.700/- and a couple of others from other stores.
My problem is my eye sight is 'normal' when checked by opticians but I am comfortable only when I use the reading glass - probably owing to the fact that I need more light to read arising out of my earlier years of working with high powered desk lamps to illuminate SMDs in Printed Circuit Boards.
As I get older, I compensate by increasing the size of the monitors.

Sadly, my sight is not normal: I can barely read anything without glasses.

Also, my prescription for each eye is not the same. I have bought over-the-counter reading glasses in UK (a couple of quid) to get me through a day when the specs got left at home, but it is not a good result, and probably bad for my eyes.

For those who need the same power for both eyes, though, it is a great solution and much cheaper than prescription glasses.

I was about to stay for a few days in Bangalore with my 18 year old cousin. He was diagnosed with chicken pox. He will be leaving to his native tomorrow. I never had chicken pox. Is it safe to live in his apartment after 4 days? Sorry if this question sounds stupid

It should be relatively safe, as your cousin is not going to be there. Chickenpox is contagious till the time the patient has 'active lesions' on him. Once all lesions have crusted, it usually is safe.

Make sure you don't use bedsheets or towels used by your cousin.

On a side note, chickenpox is not an infection to be scared of! If you start medications as soon as it is diagnosed, it is not dangerous nor does it cause too much itching or discomfort. Plus, you get 7-10 days of sick leave!!

Pregnancy with DM needs to be planned well in advance. Treatment has be individualized based on daily fluctuation in sugar level. Seeking online help and waiting for replies would end in Disaster. Would recommend seeing a reputed gynaecologist in your city.

Hi! Good morning. Yes. I have already consulted few doctors and started medications. But every doctor we've consulted have offered different opinions and I am baffled. So I thought I could take some words from here.

If you are familiar with south Bangalore (Jayanagar area), there is a big hearing and vertigo clinic on Ashoka Pillar Road, Jayanagar 3rd Block. Its next to the Ezone showroom on that road. Ive heard its quite popular and well known. Don't remember the name of the clinic off hand though.

Is it that you have taken lot of self-prescribed medicines for head-ache / pain ?
Treatment looks to be specific to type of overdose and hence likely includes anti-dotes for the medication taken previously.

The medicines were indeed prescribed by a Doc. But the frequency of intake has gone out of control.
Can I please PM you on the details, if you don't mind?
