Weight loss is common during stress and grief. If this trend continues for a month or so, a health check-up is advisable.

High Stress can elevate Cortisol levels. Cortisol breaks down protein for generating energy. In other words, this may cause loss of muscle mass, which is not good.

If you can, buy a good quality scale (Tanita/Omron) and measure the weight every week (in bathroom with no/minimal clothing to avoid errors) at the same time of the day (say after bath and before breakfast). If the trend continues, seeing a doctor would be good. Ask the doctor if it could be due to diabetes (may ask for HbA1c), or hormonal issues (like hyper-thyroid) or absorption issues (lower folic acid or Vit-B12)

I'm no doctor, but have a lot of experience in being sick

Good Luck!

One of my relatives (Girl, age 21, otherwise healthy) is suffering from lack of sleep. She hardly gets about 4 hours of sleep per day if at all. What medicine could she take? Some doctor prescribed anxit 0.5mg but did not really work.

@Suman, is that "sleeping pills" / anti-depressants ? If yes, that will not be a solution to the problem, will it ? Unless she is stressed out for some reason, and this is to help her relax & get back to her normal routine

She is probably not stressed for anything, just does not get sleep at all. Yes, anxit did not really work. What would be the best medicine to get her adequate sleep?

@Sumannandy, I Feel you are over-simplifying the matter. Esp about health, I dont think it is good idea to think of a direct-cause & effect approach.

From what little you have said, it is not clear if she has consulted any other doctor, or for how long this problem has been there.

MY wife, a doctor, said this will need to be investigated. Any doctor will need to review complete history, and current condition of patient for a proper diagnosis before prescribing any medication.

Thanks for the pointer. She has gone through a general checkup and everything is normal. The only problem is she does not get sleep. So the previous doctor prescribed anxit which was not really helpful and we are checking if she could take any alternate medication.

Does not want to sleep or wants to but cannot fall asleep.

Trry yoga and don't ever try any medicine for sleep.

Also 4 hours of sleep would be what I used to get in my twenties.

Not a doctor do not have any knowledge but can vouch for Savasana. Yoga helps you get sleep. The catch is you need to keep your mind blank and not think.

I wish all doctors investigate like you said. It appears to me that they investigate only if it leads to revenue, that is, laboratory tests. They don't listen enough to their patients, and they don't ask enough questions. They listen to first few sentences and start writing prescriptions. If you try to add more details, they show you the prescription and say something like 'take this for one week and come back'. They seem to be in a hurry to call next patient, be finished with and rush to next hospital. This is from my general experience at Max and Fortis.

A recent incident: during a project recently, this organization was interviewing labs & doctors about testing & other related aspects. This particular doctor declared that as per the dharma he follows, he does not take any commissions from the labs etc etc. Tried to show a very clean stand. The team went completed that interview, and went to the near by lab, where they asked the lab owner about the usual linkage. The lab owner revealed the usual cuts that the doctors got, including this particular doctor.

Most doctors seem to follow that same practice.

Could it be because of some personal reasons that she is not willing to reveal? Since you mentioned the age , i feel there could be different reasons for her lack of sleep . Try to talk with her close friends without her knowing if they know anything or the change of behaviour with the friends. Just a suggestion . No offense

No offence taken, in fact thanks for your help. Yes we thought about it but does not look like it as far as we know. Even we do not want her to take any medication but she is also worried about the lack of sleep.

For how many days should one take it easy after a blood donation?

My cycle commute is 36 kms.
I am planning on donating some blood tomorrow.

Should I avoid cycling to work on Thursday and Friday.

Or is just a one day gap i.e. Thursday enough.
