A lot of us are working in IT and some of us are students, i am sure there is a lot of knowledge pool in the forum, which we can use to solve our day to day technical queries. Lets use this thread as a platform for the same.

Some of my queries for today - related to SIP (session initiation protocol)

Q1. Why is ACK treated as a separate transaction , ie why isn't it the part of same transaction as INVITE ?
Q2. Why does INVITE use a 3-way handshake mechanism as against request-response mechanism of other SIP methods ?

I am in market for SME server (immediate buy)

Can anyone suggest a decent dependable server. Dell T3400/5500 or comparitive HP/IBM is better?

If I may suggest Sir, Seeing the title of the thread I thought it was related to Cars, till I opened it and found it was IT related. Though you have put it in shifting gears, but I didnt read that. Sorry!! So maybe you can rename your thread mentioning somewhere its IT related

I need to build support for Indian languages in a web-site built using Joomla. I tried the akIndicPlugin for TinyMCE editor but couldn't make it work.

Our team is working Remote Desktop software. We want to measure desktop experience, both qualitative & quantitative. Any tool or any metric would be helpful. Any assistance regarding will be appreciated.

PS: For instance, many feel Windows 7 is faster than Windows Vista. We want to measure how fast it is.

A friend of mine works in a VC.

He sometime discusses product ideas with me. With the firm understanding that I will not google it.

Google search trends are noted and your ideas stolen.

Remember that before posting your idea. For what is s/w but an idea.

These (T3400/5500) are not server products.

These are geared for workstation use.

For a server you are looking at:

1. Hardware that can take abuse (can run 24/7 for months)
2. Can handle power fluctuations and not pass it on to HDD
3. Has dedicated RAID card so that an HDD error does not result in loss of data

RAID 1 would work in speeding virtual machines if you are looking at deploying GSX or ESX server. For SMB I would recommend GSX since it is now free and you can buy support as and when you need it.

You can look at Dell PowerEdge T410.

Or if you spend 15k on Server Cabinet + SMPS and 10k for RAID controller, then it is possible to get it assembled. Total cost of assembled machine would be around 50k.

He needs it for a SME.

These are PC class machines. No use paying a premium for these.

Would be better to use a standard desktop + RAID controller or some automated system for backup (or both).

For SME, data is usually most important* and desktop class machines do not have redundancy.

*Other factors like management / remote admin /hot swap/data access without OS can be ignored for SME.

I saw the configuration and it was a Quad Core 2 machine. Actually the server will be used only by three sharing computers. (2 remote access + 1 server user). We do not have any technical know-how and thus without administrator I thought of buying branded with support. One of the team member SirAlec also suggested the same.

Thank you @NetfreakBombay. I would like to go in for branded as going to and fro from Nehru Place is a day waster and what those guys to the computer only God knows. A bit wary about that.

The main purpose of the sever is to have one remote PC make virtual Session and run word documents or do presentations.

The person sitting on the server is doing emails and internet surfing.

The server also is the backup system for data storage.

Very basic operations.

For future and hopefully once we grow we can have a blade cluster running with a full time admin.

Or also check with Sun. They have very good x64 Servers. Prefer to take AMD Opteron in server class low-end machines as they save you on power bills and are as good as Intel xeons if not better.

Besides, Opteron Instanbul procs are 6 Cores, are cheaper and have future scalability for just in case situation.

For surfing and mails and remote desktop? I think what Sn1p3r is looking for more importantly is good service.
