Default Life Behind Bars

It all started when I was reading an article talking about a traffic jam for hours in front of the old central jail .Apparently this was open for public viewing. Inmates from here were moved to another prison and this building is going to be demolished soon.
Pic 1 says it all. Opened 1837. After the inmates were moved out 3 years back, this building has not been maintained or painted. Am assuming it was probably cleaner when there were ppl in it.

Pic 2 shows the visiting areas. Pic 3 and Pic 5 shows a typical individual cell. Pic 4 - Cells that host atleast 20-25 ppl. ( to be continued )

Looks creepy. Like you said, it is not maintained at all. Did you go there personally?

After reading the title of this thread I thought you spent a night behind bars.

Note from support team: Thread moved to right section.

neoranjit, this is not a travelogue but a different kind of experience. It's more of a traveling back in time.

You must record it in a detailed manner and share your collection. It can be a great set of assets in the future.

Please do a detail study there. All the best.

Your travelogue misled me totally. I though you were behind the bars and you want to share that experience !!

But does it deserve the travelogue section? Plus I cannot even comment which is the best section (May be Shifting gears).

Ha ranjit, so you took some time off to visit a (historical) place that almost everyone in Chennai seems to be visiting, before it gets demolished.

As per the newspapers, 3 TN CMs (current CM M.Karunanidhi, ex-CMs J.Jayalalitha & Annadurai) have spent time there. And Veer Savarkar spent some time there, before being moved to the Andaman jail.

Good one, man. I want to do it, but not sure whether I will make it before it is razed.

LOL, some government buildings are in a worse condition than this. And graffiti on my school toilet walls is much more vulgar

Looks like Senthil was treating his life-imprisonment like any student would treat his 3-4 years at the college hostel - marking territory and stuff.

Look at the concrete beds with a slight upward slant at one end to resemble a pillow.

Well, if you are referring to the graffiti in English on the wall, I guess that is the handiwork of the recent visitors - the public visiting the prison. And not that of the jail inmates.

Pic 4 / 5, called the condemned room. Reserved for trouble makers within the prison. Approx a 4*4 room with no electricity and black coloured walls.

Pic 6,7 View from the in-house medical center

Pic 8 : Written on the walls at the VIP center ( where all political leaders are held )

The writing on the wall in the last pic (Sorry, I could not be the person you wanted me to be) gave me goosebumps just imagining the mental/emotional state of the prisoner who had written it.
