Did this 4 years ago

Bangalore to outside Mysore turn right to hunsur - go to siddapur onto Kannur. Roads were bad - supposed to have improved. Left at 6.00, reached Kannur at 11.00 in a Santro

Thanks ajmat.
The right turn outside Mysore that goes to hunsur, thats the one that goes past that bird sanctuary, right?

you dont need to go to mysore to reach hunsur. you can take a deviation from srirangapatna. if you remember the road which goes to the bird sanctuary, continue on that road and you will hit hunsur.

Correct - dont need to touch Mysore, since you can take the 'ring road'. You can also drive straight to Siddhapur without touching any of the towns in between (the route we took to Orange County) and then on to Virajpet, Iritty and Kannur/Thalassery.

hey amitoj, if you dont mind taking a slightly longish route, i could suggest a killer route :-) (takes you within 5km of CREC or is it NITC now)

Bangalore - Gundalpet - Sultan Battery - Kalpetta - Adivaram - Calicut - Kannur

Bangalore - Gundalpet you could go via Mysore OR via Kanakapura - Malavalli - Kollegal - Yelandur - Chamarajnagar. Roads are really good except for the stretch between Kollegal and Chamarajnagar. But then it beats the mysore road hollow in its current state :-)

The stretch between Gundalpet and Calicut is just AWESOME!!!!!

Between Battery and Kannur there is a route through Mananthawadi if im not mistaken, which would be shorter than going through Kalpetta and Calicut

bangalore-mysore

from mysore take the road to bandipur, but turn at gundlupet(62kms)
gundlupet -mulehole-kalpetta.

from kalpetta take the kannur road.

but i would suggest the route via mangalore.

bangalore-mangalore-kasargod-kannur.

take the bangalore-mangalore NH48 which is a drivers paradise.
from mangalore take the left for nh17 from pumpwell circle.

from mangalore its another greaqt road on the Nh17 via kasargod.

mangalore-kasargod=50kms.
kasargod-kannur=90kms.

so thats around 500kms of fun.

Thanks for the reminder Rudra, i've already planned to take the car to GMW this week to get it fully serviced... will give me enough time to take it back to them if there is something wrong with it even after servicing.

Hey, can always do with an expert advice... u mind taking my car for a spin after the servicing??? please???

rahul... this route is very tempting... specially since i will be going with another fellow CREC'ian...
but... approximately how much would be the total distance if i take this route?

Cheers

Another pic is from the Bangalore - Gundalpet - Sultan Battery - Kalpetta - Adivaram - Calicut - Kannur route

[img=http://img236.echo.cx/img236/7897/viewfromhairpin0hs.th.jpg]

both are good driving experience..but i would suggest a bike, instead of car (I've gone on these roads both on my RX100 and later, M800)

Wow awesome pics GS! But why do u suggest a bike instead of a car?
I guess i will take one route while going and the other while coming back.
Also came across this link on bsmotoring.com

PS: Rudra sirji, got my car serviced the day before and also got the wobbling rectified. It was because the rim was a bit bent from the inside.

Default Post trip....

Here are some snaps of my trip to Kannur over the weekend. I took the Blore - Mysore - Hunsur - Virajpet - Iritty - Kannur route while going and Kannur - Thalassery - Calicut - Gundulpet - Mysore - Bangalore on the way back. These snaps are from the return trip.

The Virajpet - Iritty section was a real test because of the huge craters on that section. Overall the route didnt offer much to write about except that driving through the jungles in the night time is quite an experience.

The return trip was better. Paid a visit to my alma mater, Calicut REC, now known as National Institute of Technology. The Mysore - Bangalore traffic was insane to say the least. There are speed bumps on the highway at every diversion or cut in the divider and people from one side would occupy all the road while going over the speed breaker. I took a huuuge sigh of relief when i got off the Mysore road and into the outer ring road... and then came the thunderstorm!!
Anyways, here are some of the pics... hope u like em.

Kannur to Calicut

Close to Calicut

Curves after Calicut

Drool....

Driving through the jungles

Jungles...

This dude didnt like being photographed... He gave us the charge and i had to make a quick getaway! This was the most thrilling part.

Before Mysore

Before Mysore

1 Lakh kms completed.

Those after Calicut route is awesome. Never seen any road with such banking.

I wonder why they made the road winding? U can actually take one straight racing line through it.
