Lightbulb Pranayam: Are You a part of the Yoga revolution?

Health is wealth. I am sure all of you will agree with me.

Well i dont know about south/west India, but here in North India, there is a tide going on, the tide of Yoga .. or PRANAYAMA as it is called in Sanskrit.
I am no agent of Swami Ramdev, but beleive me, what i have heard from people and what i have experienced myself during my short experiment with Pranayama, its nothing short of amazing!

I mean, many of us go to gym, do swimming, do jogging for hours.. and still, if we stop any of these exercises, we feel the return of bad health, the return of ailments.. isnt it?

And if you thought Swami Ramdev is just another "dhongi maharaj" teaching people the way to live life, teaching people how to cope up with fear of death, teaching Ramayna lessons, YOU ARE WRONG.
What that person is doing, you have to see it to appreciate. He himself is a strong opposer of these so called "dhongi sadhus". He beleives in improving the lives of people through the power of YOGA. After all, a strong mind and a strong body cannot be achieved without good health. Isnt it?

And if you thought Yoga opposes Medical science, you are wrong again. Because half of the janta attending Ramdev's camps are doctors and engineers (like me ).. the act of breathing in and breathing out is NOT ANTI-MEDICAL SCIENCE (ask any doctor)...

Till about an year ago, even i did not beleive in this, and dismissed as total crap.
BUT.. i was wrong. Seeing is believing.... and about a dozen people i know who have practised Pranayam have benefitted from it..

Its surely is a way of life, and from now on, it will be a part of my lifestyle..

I do practice some Yogasana in the morning and also meditate (which is one of the 8 components of Yoga) .

But my meditation is based on scientific discoveries made in last 2-3 decades. I use ulta low Binaural beat frequency patterns. This technique stimulate the creation of new neural pathways between the right and left hemispheres of brain and thus balancing and leading to a high-performance state scientists call "whole brain functioning".

Not a big fan of Yoga yet. I did attend the Art of Living course and did the Sudarshan Kriya sometimes. It was good ... but I get the same kind of high and sense of peace through a heavy workout at the gym.

Almost every "dhongi maharaj" have this many share of doctors and engineers. We got a screwed up educational system, I guess.

A good yoga instructor is more than enough for one to learn Pranayama. What value add this swami ramdev gives in his Pranayama teaching???

BTW, What is this "dhongi"???
BTW 2, Sorry if had any traces of sarcasm. I love to hate these maharajs and swamis...

NC:
Pranayama is the Indian form of yogic exercise. It involves basically just two things: breathing in and breathing out in different ways and different postures. It has a strong scientific basis to it as well. I suggest you watch AASTHA channel at 8.30 pm and 5 am.

SMG and Typeone:
Western yoga is quite different from the Indian Pranayam. Western Yoga only emphasises on mental and spiritual health by using meditation techniques. Thats not what Pranayama is about. Pranayama is about attaining good Physical and mental health by means of yogic excercises.

gkrishn:
Even I hate these Sadhus and Maharajas. I dont even let watch anyone in my home those stupid religious channels. BUT... Swami Ramdev is not such person. If you have listened to him ever, on TV or in one of his camps, you will know that he does not do this Trash talking like other Sadhus do. In other words, his sole focus is on Pranayam techniqus and even when he does speak he talks about Indian values and other good things. (i strongly suggest you have a look at his Shows in AASTHA channel)..

And yes, i am no agent of Ramdev or any other person... If thousands of people are benefitting from something which our ancient tradition has given us, than whats wrong in it?
Do a search on the internet.. or anywhere else about Yoga/Pranayam. I bet you wont find even a single comment Against it. Because, even medical science is finding proofs that regular practising of Yoga prevents and cures some otherwise uncurable/dangerous diseases.

And as swami Ramdev rightly says:
"Mera Uddeshya tumhe Shishya banana nahi, Yodhdha Banana hai"

Good that Swami Ramdev is propagating Yoga. Swami Ramdev’s breathing routine as such may be as harmless as useless. But it comes with the stunning claim to cure all kinds of illnesses including cancer and HIV/Aids. His brand of yoga, so runs his pseudo medical argument, increases the CD4 count – the number of cells attacking the HIV virus. Such baseless and irresponsible claims, luring a vast number of patients in need of medical treatment into a false sense of security, turn Swami Ramdev’s yoga ministry a disastrous venture.

Read more here: India: Stop "yoga evangelist" Swami Ramdev

BTW, Swami Ramdev is proponent of Pranayam, and AOL's Sri Sri Sri Ravishankar is proponent of Sudarshana Kriya - all benefactors of the great Yoga, the great ancient Hindu discipline to promote control of the body and mind !!

Can't depend of the proof of doctors of what doctors do. You & I know the ill effects of smoking and how many doctors don't smoke?

mjothi, I feel it would be wiser to wait till he is a little older, maybe 8 or 10. Of course, if he is interested in Yoga, then go for it
If you were in Trivandrum, I could have pointed you in the right direction, but alas

ps: Please DO NOT do Yoga after watching a video on it. Please go to a good instructor.

my thoughts exactly. for small kids, some stretching before and after sports is good enough. they are still toughening their bones. they need sports with impact like football, which will improve calcification.

introducing yoga to him as a concept will be good enough for him to pursue it later.

somebody asked what is pranayama. pran (or pran vayu, oxygen) refers to the breath we take. control and directed use of breathing is pranayama. also includes freaky multi minute stopping of breath.

And @vivek

I agree. Let me tell the reason for choosing such meditation class.

My kid is so hyper active and is not concentrating on the lessons. Very playful in class too and teachers complain that he is not concentrating. They also say that he is very intelligent, if he sits alone and do stuffs.

The same feedback from Tution teachers and ABACuS teachers. Abacus teacher says that he completes several pages if he is just alone with out other kids. Else, he takes hours to complete just one pages while other children present. So, I was tyring to see if I can do something to help me concentrate on what he does. So, I thought this would

Anyway, I am not an expert in this so cant decide on. Planning to take him to some class and seek advice from them if its advisable to have him undergo it in this age.

Pranayama, is very effective, but if practiced without proper guide or coaching, is harmful.
To all those who are interested or just curious, it is very effective and can cure a lot of diseases, but instead of just watching on TV and learning it, better attend some yoga classes before practicing at home. Though it is as simple as breathing in and out, its not advisable to practice without guidance.
But, just try it for few min a day and see the results for yourself.

By the way, did you monitor his time spent on TV/PC games etc, versus time spent with parents in meaningful conversation? Probably taking his hourly schedule for a week and analyzing will give some clues.

Also diet, is he having too much of sugars, chocolate, caffeine (soft drinks)? that makes kids hyperactive.

I would love to practice yoga and intend to do it atleast 3 times a week in the near future. Having seen the effect on some close family members & friends, I have been left impressed by the surge in mental / physical capability.

Anyone out there into power yoga? Any tips or feedback?
