not bad for a rookie! in the second shot, the stem and the leaf are kind of disturbing the composition - could have zoomed in to bit more to avoid them

+1 to that.

Little tight composition would have helped. Read about rule of third, in both the cases, your subject is bang in the center. A lesser DOF, may help you to blurr out the background.

@gurus: no comments in my shots (or is it not worth of comments). need the criticism to get better.

Let's look at this thread in little different manner.

With advent of digital photography, we really go shutter-happy, as there are minimal incremental cost per shot. So we all may have multiple photos which conform to the theme, but do you want to post all of them in the thread.

If one asks a pro or serious amateur, one can understand for one shot to be obtained we may have have to discard 99 others.

So let's introspect ourselves before putting the photographs here, you may ask the following questions to self -
a) Do I want to print the photo in a large size (18*12 or larger) and frame and put in my drawing room?
b) Do I want to print the photo in large size (8*6 or larger) and keep it in my best photo collection album?

If the answer is yes for these questions, please go ahead and post in this thread. If no, then think.

These are my personal opinion (and the questions are just indicative in nature but hope to give a line of thinking), so take or leave the suggestion at your discretion.

I agree with arindamray. There has to be someway of maintaining quality. I used to think one of the moderators can review the photos and delete some whichever are deemed substandard. But that would be rude and undemocratic. So self restraint seem to be the best option.

We used to do that in auto-image thread, but then there was a huge uproar against it. So we stopped reviewing and deleting.
