Actually, if you do not shoot towards the north(Pole star does not move), you can get much more movement.
If you are shooting towards north, and want a nice circle, around the pole star, you need to get much longer.
Eg
Exposure = 1535 s
ISO 200
F 3.5
18mm

The city lights have added to the noise pollution, thats why the glow is there.
Shooting towards east or west, you get long trails even with shorter exposures
For example
Exposure = 900 seconds
F 4.0
ISO 200
The extra bright star is Venus
Shot towards the west to get venus setting behind mountain

@sukiwa, technically your shout is good. You have followed rule of thirds, and exposure is good, but from a composition standpoint it loses.
There is nothing of particular interest here. The blown lights towards right distract from the shot, and the hill in distance is just a fain silhouette.

When you take a night shot, always ask yourself, would like like to take a day shot also at same place, and you will have your answer.
Of course, in urban setting the best is taking light trails etc.,
Then there are some subjects which look great at night

Very nice shot! But it seems that the merry go round on the right side was stationary, otherwise, it would have looked like a pot shape.

Nice photos again tsk and thanks for the tips.

This is a different type of a photo than the ones posted till now. I believe its called light painting. It involves a long exposure and a tripod, so I hope this qualifies for the theme.

Infact, there are photographers who excel in this, and I must say, you are one of those.
I can never get straight lines, and you wrote your name in cursive!

Ohh!!! Thank You.

This is what I did.

1. Set the camera on 30 second shutter speed on a tripod 10 feet away from a blank wall.

2. set the self timer to 10 seconds.

3. face the wall (with ur back to the camera) and stretch your right hand which has the torch to the wall.

4. Start writing with the torch on the wall, slowly moving forward, as you would write on a piece of paper.

WOW Tanveer/Samurai this is an excellent initiative. I have always had an itch to learn photography but could never find the time. Seems this thread will teach me the basics and a lot more.

Superb pictures everyone. I will now be saving up to buy me another boy-toy and hope to click pictures like you all. Till then I will keep watching and learning.

Add to the above, if you have a Canon P&S, downloading CHDK can increase your exposure upto 60seconds.
