Sorry about the late entry into the thread. The situation that you describe here has quite changed in the recent past, particularly from this year. All mashimas and pishimas, mamas and meshos have a camera phone in hand now.
So, I am told, inside the pandals they had a different sight this year - instead of folded hands of the viewers, most had one hand raised for taking pictures. Somewhat like a crowd of half Chaitannyas. And most were also standing on tip-toes.
I am also told there was some SMS vote based contest with Pujo pictures etc. Don't know the details. That added fuel to the fire.

Was just pointed to this thread by btirthankar, and although I am quite a half-year late in doing so, I take this opportunity at the end of Navratri to post a link to my Durga Puja photographs posted elsewhere:

Durga Puja in Kolkata, 2008 pictures, photos, and videos, from india on webshots

There are some 158 pics there, and I didn't have the patience to resize and upload them again to T-BHP.

Hope you enjoy them, and recharge your batteries for this year's Durga Pujo; 24th September is Shoshthi!

Default Durga Puja in Hyderabad

In Hyderabad,Durga Puja is celebrated with pomp and holiness and one of happening place is the Bengali Shomiti in the Lower Tank Bund Road, which attracts many people from various parts of the city.
The 9 day festival here is a true witness of holy shrine of Durga Godess and also various stalls and entertainment program every day.

We visited today for the Puja and witnessed a serene atmosphere. After the Aarti and Prasad distribution,we headed to the food stalls located in the same environs and it was dlightful experiance to taste lovely bengali food and at a very affordable prices.
My family decided to try almost every Bengali stall and to sum up some of the delicacies that we tasted were:
- Kolkata Dum Biryani
- Veg Chops
- Luchi with Aloo Sabzi
- Veg Rolls (from Roll Call Stall)
- Roshgollas & Shondesh
- Ice Kova

It was truly a great festive time had at the end of the day and look forward for next year.
Some pics of the Pandal and stalls that i could click.
Happy Dussera to all Team BHPians and their families

Default Maa elen Kolkatay

Great initiative akroy, Ritayan and Hillram. Great to see Durga Puja being celebrated with such enthusiasm in Hyderabad, Delhi and Atlanta.

And now, pics of Kolkata, the city where Durga Puja is an institution, where thousands descend on to the streets and tirelessly stay up nights, where the lights and the sound of the Dhaks give goosebumps to every onlooker.

(Note that this is a random collection of pics. I have not tried to capture only Pandal themes or only Beautiful statues as a method. What follows is a selection of what has struck to be beautiful to my eye).

Adi Kumartuli. One of the first Pujas in Kolkata, now sadly sidelined by its richer cousin, Kumartuli Park.

Bagbazar Sarbojonin.

Every year I wonder at the grandeur of this century old Puja. The beauty of the statue, the chandelier, the incense. Truly one of Kolkata's grandest Pujas.

College Square. Another grand and well funded Puja. It took us 1.5 hrs to walk up to the Pandal among a sea of humanity. But the wait was worth it.

Kumartuli Park, the richer and more famous cousin. They had a strange red theme to the idol this time.

Singhi Park. Another very famous landmark in South Kolkata, opposite Ekdalia.

Tridhara Sangha. This little location in South Kolkata has become famous of late, creating unique pandal themes that the crowds just flock to see. This year's theme was the Pashupatinath temple of Nepal.

The idol was too good, but people were pushing around so much that I found it impossible to stand still and take a photo.

Crowd at Md Ali Park. It took us 2 hrs to reach the Pandal, as there were 15,000 people in the crowd! Check out the size of the crowd.

Default Some more pics

Some more random pics.

Though Durga Puja has always been a Sarbojonin (Sarvajanik) puja, it first started out being held in traditional century old Bengali houses. Over the years, these families have grown to humongous sizes and split to various locations, yet once a year they reunite at the old house and celebrate the Puja. I was lucky to be invited to 2 such houses:

1. Chandra Family at Bowbazar.. The most famous person from this family has been the late Mr. Pratap Chandra Chandra, ex Education minister of Bengal and a famed social activist.

The Puja is now in its 161st year.

2. Chunder family at Jhamapukur.. One of the oldest "Sonar Bene" families of Kolkata and distantly related to my wife. Their Puja is now in its 248th year!

I stay in BJ block in Salt Lake, which celebrated its 25th year in 2008. They put up a spectacular Pandal and idol, and overnight became one of the highest visited Pujas in Salt Lake. Won a lot of awards too.

This year's show was less grand, but still a brave effort from such a small block.

An ad I couldn't resist capturing on camera. Eating is as much a part of Durga Puja as anything else, and the pic just shows the best of Bengali cuisine.

Anjan Dutta, a childhood idol. The man has been performing his stock of Bengali songs since 1994, and I've been a fan for so long. But it was nearly 10 years that I've attended a live show of his. This one was at Ballygunge Cultural Association, where Bhpian vroooom lives.

The Rosgulla, so loved by Bongs and non-Bongs alike, was discovered by Mr Nabin Chandra Das in a house in Baghbazar. The original house has been much modified, but this marble edifice still stands testimony to his achievement. Discovered on a walk from Baghbazar to Kumartuli.

And last, a childhood friend had come down with his wife to relive Puja moments. 4 of us were out the whole time. These pic has been taken at the Ganges ghat, against a setting sun.

First pic, me and my wife. Second, me with my friend and his wife.

FD Block generally puts up good pandal themes each year, although none has managed to fetch as many awards as the Titanic theme. This year they put up a Terracota temple. Very very good theme.

Unfortunately I visited FD (and many other Pandals) on Ashtami night, a night I forgot to carry my camera (sob sob). Will try to get the pics from my friend and post.
