The link is a giveaway. It says Khayyam. But I thought Shola aur Shabnam was Chitragupt.

My eternal favorite - Rafi.

His haunting voice adds a tinge of extra melancholiness to his songs. What smoothness! Just like the finest threads of silk.

Some of my favorites:-

"Mera to jo bhi kadam hai" - Dosti

"Mai ye soch kar uske dar se utha tha" - Haqeeqat

"Jaane kya dhoondti rehti hain" - Shola Aur Shabnam

Of course, there are PLENTY more.

This song, for me, actually defines the genre "Ghazal":

If you note the second song from the list (Tere Ghar ke Saamne), as I mentioned earlier in this thread, its one of the rare combinations of lyricist and music director. (Hasrat Jaipuri and SD Burman). There are very few movies for that combination. The other one which I am aware of is Ziddi.

Also if you note that song has a unique echo effect. A classic one to list too. SD Burman was a real genius. Truly a dad to RD!

Correct. They did only 3 or 4 films together - there was a flop called Deewangee back in '76.

You forgot this one, which has the echo-trailing effect as well:

Indeed, a true musical genius!

Even more rare is the combination of Hasrat with RD. I think there is only one. Bhoot Bangala where RD also acted a bit. Coming back to Hasrat and SD, Ziddi has some amazing live songs by Rafi.

SD was very good at that. He had quite a range working with various lyricists. Initially it was Saahir. Shailendra/Hasrat were a rarity (though his association with Shailendra were par excellence) and finally the long standing relationship with Majrooh.

I don't know if this fully fits into the thread,

but this is so nostalgic, and my all time favourite from Talat Aziz:

Very true. Madan Mohan were the more classical of the lot. OP Nayyar was more on the lighter side of it. The best of OP for me was from "Mere Sanam". The song being Pukarata Chala Hoon Mai.

Moving on to different direction: SD Burman is a genius for music. But so is he for his own voice too. A different style of rich baritone voice.

One from Movie Bandini with lyrics by Shailendra and his own music.

Shola aur Shabbnam had Dharmendra in lead role.

How is it that the "Western" music has such lovely recording quality (take stuff from even 1950s or 1960s), whereas it took us 30-40 more years to come up to decent sound quality.

Or is it that LPs of yesteryears actually had good sound quality but we (me specifically) have never been exposed to it?

Hi everybody.
2 zesty songs from the Shammi Kapoor era. Nobody could give "jhatkas" like him.

Yes they have been played umpteen times but are still enjoyable so enjoy.
Regards
PS: Ampere. Hi Thanks

One of the finest renditions by Rafi saab in that film (pretty much the highlight of the entire film if you ask me). See how smoothly Rafi touches on the "pancham swar" when he stretches the Aa jaao towards the end:

Another Rafi favorite where he goes into pancham mode:

And of course, the eternal classic which (reportedly) had the great singer bleeding from his throat and mouth by the time the recording take was over:

I leave you guys with a wonderful memento from those musical days of yore.

1950's, 60's and 70's Hindi songs?-10404320_745427265565778_3146626599091719477_n.jpg

Recognise everyone in this vintage photo?
