hahaha... Pavan, you are such a pavam (innocent as per MalluLand)!

These kind of mailers have done so many round, I guess even the person who started this might have had enough of this spam.

Just ignore it buddy.

Google will give you tons of such similar ones.

EDIT: A response a minute! Just goes to show how familiar all of us are with Mr.Nigeria!

Please look up "Nigerian 419 Scam" or "Advance Fee Fraud" on Google. Makes for interesting reading, especially the number of Americans that have fallen for such an obvious con job.

EDIT: Mods you may want to lock this thread.

Question Strange SMS : SPAM, Hoax or What?

I just received an SMS with a sender name saying "Congratulations! You have won either 25000 Rs cash or an iPod or a ringtone. Call+23222289840 & find out how to claim your prize! Rates Applicable.

What I want to know is, how many people on this board has received similar hoax messages. Is there a way I can find out who is the sender and if they are based in India, then get phone companies to ban them somehow. Because I am pretty sure, anyone calling those numbers will be charged with party line call charges. Not fair.

No.

SMS and Call work on the basis of "trust".

In golden old days only large telcos had switching systems and one telco could trust that the Call ID / Sender ID is correct. Part of that is required for Caller ID to work in case of call forwarding / redirects.

Now, ANY one can send ANY number as source.

E.g. You can send an SMS to yourself from your own number.

This is known as a Nigerian scam. It's a classic. Earlier such things were done by letters, then email and now sms.
Don't reply anything or you'll be bombarded with a lot of messages from other similar numbers.
I had once gotten a scam email from the United Nations Nigerian Scam Compensation Fund from a hotmail address! Ha ha ha.. poor UN needs to use free email ids.. but original title.
Do a google search on Nigerian Scam and you'll get details.

Here is what is going to happen when you dial that number.

1. You will get an "engaged" tone.

2. The tone will be actually recorded one; the phone at the other end has been actually activated; and you will be billed by your telco (eg:- BSNL / MTNL).

3. Your telco is bound to give a percentage of its earnings from you to the telco of the number you called.

4. That telco will pay a cut to the scamster.
