Plagiarism per se is a moral offence first and since over the last so many years, the copyright infringement / IPR acts and laws have been considerably tightened it has become a punishable offence too. Earlier it was more to with dishonour. Now there are several more dimensions to the punishment(s).

If for example, a doctoral thesis etc is proven to have elements of plagiarized material, there have been cases where the Doctoral Degree has been with-held and in some cases even stripped from the recipient by the concerned University.

This is more so abroad than in India where anyway the standards of record keeping and cross referencing are very poor.

The "groves of academe" in India can be likened to a sort of a Factory/ Assembly line setup churning out M.Phil's and PhD's by the score!

Remember that Indian writer Kaavya Vishwanathan and her allegedly plagiarized book Opal Mehta? What happened finally other than the fact that it fizzled out quite rapidly in today's sensation feeding frenzy which is fuelled by the Media and allied services?

The internet has not only made it easier to plagiarize, but also detect plagiarism. My university (Bentley) used an automated software to screen student submissions (primarily word documents) vis a vis what's available on the net. Many a student were warned & expelled based on hard evidence.
