The EMIT used by Infinity for their car speakers was derived from their home audio EMIMs, EMITs, etc.. but had quite different radition patterns. The home audio EMIMs/EMITs almost mimicked the raditaion pattern of a traditional ribbon (a la Aurum Cantus G2/G3 or Fountek) but once the shape of the diaphram and etched voice coil changed the radiation pattern changed too. Funnily when I heard the Infnify EMIT/SEMIT car tweeters (some years back) they sounded just right for the car (I wondered, then, if this was an accident of design).

A designer named Arnie Nudell was responsible for loudspeakers that incorporated the EMIT/EMIM ribbon drivers. These were flat (planar) quasi-ribbons that worked to move air based on the principal of electro magnetic repulsion. EMIT/EMIM were acronyms for Electromagnetic Induction Tweeter and Midrange. The efficient SM (Studio Monitor) series incorporated a polycell tweeter and graphite impregnated midrange/woofers. While not as elaborate or high end as previous Infinity efforts, they represented a popular consumer niche.
