Default A Guide : The Great Indian DHABAs

Hi Guys,

I just noticed we have so many cool travelouges, its time we have a thread specifically for Dhabas/Highway stops across our country.

To get this going,i will quickly list a few popular ones in North :

Haveli,GT Road (Jalandhar) - Excellent Punjabi food.

Cheetal Grand, Delhi Mussorie Road ( Khatauli) - Serves fresh Juices, breakfast, etc * shuts quite early iirc

Dhabas @ Murthal - GT Road (Outskirts of Delhi, enroute to Chandigarh) - Must try the Parathas here

Jain Shikanji,Modinagar ( Near Meerut,enroute to Dehradun/mussoorie) - Only Serves "Masala fresh lime Soda" *Not a dhaba,just a quick 2 min stop.

Nice topic. The team-bhp guide to the best dhabas on important routes, like the "Highway on my plate" show. I will be glued to this thread.

The best dhaba I have ever been to easily was the Bittu da Dhaba on the Jabalpur Mandla road where the Rajma and the Dal were the best I have ever had a chance to taste.

The best of the lot of Dhabas in Murthal is "Sukhdev Da Dhaba". Driving Delhi to Karnal, it is the last one on the series.

Puran Singh Da Dhaba at Ambala is legendary.

There is also another one whose name i can't recall. It is close to Oasis, Karnal and comes on the left side if Oasis is on your right. And no, it's not Zhilmil dhaba.

But it will be good to see if there are any decent dhabas around Bangalore. Kanakpura road used to have some, a long long time ago.

There are 4-5 Puran Singh ka Dhabas. Puran singh ka asli dhaba, asli puran singh, dhaba puran singh and like that. Its very difficult to identiy the original one. Nevertheless food is very good in all of them.

Another good one and comparatively new is Chaupal about 5kms before one enters Amabala from Delhi side towards right. This one has a good seating and parking arrangement.

Sheetal Dhaba in lonavla on the old Mumbai-Pune highway just before Sunny da Dhaba is one great place to eat. Sunny da dhaba is also owned by the same person.

There is one and (the is only one i came across) Dhaba " Sher-e-Punjab" on SH-23 near Manvi on Raichur- Sindhnur stretch. Rotis were just melting in mouth and chicken punjabi was delicous. Another speciality was masala omlette.

Here are 2 of my favourites -

Delhi - Chandigarh --> Murthal Dhabas - stop at most - they are all good.

Agra - Delhi --> Surya Dhaba near palwal serves an amazing lemon chicken. A very popular option as other dhabas are vegetarian and this one serves non - veg.

Any good ones between Bangalore and Chitradurga on NH4 and the Bangalore Shimoga route (through Birur and Arsikere) ? I keep travelling on this route often and rarely find any Dhabas. The only good Hotel i know is Kamat somewhere close to Sira. There where good ones before the 4 laning of the road some 10 years back. I fail to notice them these days on NH 4.

There's a legendary one (for Manipal guys at least) on NH17.

Bitto-da-dhaba; a wonderful STRICTLY VEG. dhaba run by a cranky Kannada chap, but serves delicious food.

It is about 32kms from Manipal; just a few kms after Mulki.

It is right below a huge overhead road sign saying "Welcome to Manipal - Manipal University). That's the landmark.

Sounds amazing that dhaba owned by a Kannada chap is called Bittoo ka dhaba. Either he must have purchased it or he may be he manager.

Cheetal Khatauli Food is routine stuff, but ambiance is good and food Is hygienic.

1-2 kms After Modinagar to Meerut, Jain Shikanji has a bigger joint. His Panner pakoras are delicious.

Legend of Punjab on NH3 between Thane & Shahpur, after Kalyan Phata.

Isn't there some popular dhaba at Dharampur (Kalka-Shimla road)?

The one in Jaipur - 'Sharma Dhaba' too serves food fit for legends.

Rumour goes that Baby B's wedding to Miss World was finalized here...

On a different note, Cheetal Grand in Khatauli is more of a Mid-Way rather than a dhaba. There is a similar one by the name, 'Moolchand', few kilometres ahead of Khatauli.
