MODS:Searched for similar thread on this topic and could not find any so creating a new one. If this is not the right place for this thread please move appropriately, thanks in advance - Regards NPV

Why this thread ?
I've lived most of my life in this area of Bangalore and this is one of the roads I always admired since it used to be one of the finest concreted roads and had lovely, huge trees lining it on both sides. I've seen it transform significantly - stretches near the HAL market being asphalted (on top of the concrete!), potholes suddenly appearing, unending BWSSB, cable laying mess and huge trees being mercilessly chopped (did not get as much attention as Sankey Road). Now road widening seems like it will really happen after all.

Suranjan Das Road (also referred to as the Concrete Road/HAL Road) is a key road that links HAL Aiport Road (more recently also called Old Airport Road) with Old Madras Road (NH4). Important establishments on this road are the HAL market, HAL Hospital on the service road, HAL ground near Jeevan Bima Nagar, BEML, ADE, BWSSB, GTRE, Aeronautical Society of India. Also there is a railway track that runs from the BEML rail coach factory to Byappanahalli railway station to transport the new coaches and other heavy vehicles that BEML produces. This road also has important junctions with Jeevan Bima Nagar and New Thippasandra Main Road. The past 4 years or so there has been talk/reports of this road being widened on PPP basis with Bagmane developers and HAL being the major parties.
The last 6-8 months has seen some progress (if you can call it that!) in terms of trees being felled in quick overnight/weekend operations, laying of BWSSB pipes, cables, etc and now the past week or so more work in terms of actual widening work being carried out. Here is my attempt to give you a sense of what's happening and what could be in store in the coming months.Let's take a tour of the road from Old Madras Road junction towards HAL Airport Road:
1. Stretch from OMR upto GTRE factory - no progress currently but seems like the area beside the railway track will be used for widening. On the other side of the road there is some space beside the HAL office/bus stops which will be used (did not get a picture)
2. Stretch from GTRE factory to C V Raman Nagar entrance near ADE/Michael Palya - seems like the area beside the railway track will be used for widening. On the other side of the road there is the BWSSB campus and heard that they may lose upto 10feet on their frontage (did not get a picture)
3. Stretch from C V Raman Nagar entrance near ADE to C V Raman Nagar entrance near Gitanjali Layout - Seems like the area beside the railway track will be used for widening but in some places is is significantly elevated. On the side is a high boundary wall of ADE and not sure if they will be parting with their land for widening.

4. Stretch from C V Raman Nagar entrance near Gitanjali Layout to Gitanjali Layout road - here you can see that the space beside the railway track has been levelled. Hope the service road on the other side is not lost to widening!

5. Stretch from Gitanjali Layout road to BEML-New Thippasandra Main Road junction - not much space beside the railway track on this stretch so median near service road will go (trees have already been cut down). Again, hoping the service road will not be lost fully ! There was a small park near the service road when nearing BEML. This has been demolished and being levelled now.

6. The BEML-New Thippasandra Main Road junction - suddenly this place looks huge, and road is extremely wide, it's just not what it was even 10 days ago ! The BEML two wheeler/cycle stand has gone and made way for a left turn from New Thippasandra Main Road which connects it directly to the HAL III stage service road at the back. Here, the plan is traffic from the BEML junction towards C V Raman Nagar will use the service road and in the other direction traffic will use the 'real' Suranjan Das Road but as you can see signage is not very intuitive so it's confusion all over ! When proceeding from Jeevan Bima Nagar towards C V Raman Nagar also, traffic needs to divert to left and use the service road (this place has been widended but confusing due to bad signage, lack of disipline and enforcement).

7. Stretch from BEML junction to Jeevan Bima Nagar Junction - seems like part of the tree park on one side and part of the HAL ground on the other side will make way for widening

8. Stretch from Jeevan Bima Nagar junction to HAL market - seems like most of the tree park on this side will go, other side has HAL quarters so possible that a few feet on this side will also go.

Hopefully we can get more pictures on this thread along the way to capture the progress, problems, etc

Default Re: Suranjan Das Road (Bangalore) widening progress

After almost 2.5 years since the work started, there is some progress albeit very slow.

I remember at least 3 occasions on which some local politicos, BBMP folks and contractors have 'commenced' work with banners, some puja, etc.

The progress so far is between the Gitanjali Layout junction and the Micheal Palya junction (between the gates/entry points to C V Raman Nagar).
I heard from an acquaintance that the work is slow due to the decision to widen the road with concrete so that it bonds well with the existing road surface.
Most of the concreting work is complete on the ADE boundary side of Suranjan Das Road.
This work is really "heightening" of the road with concrete

Definitely seems like it will take a long time at this pace to see more significant progress.

With the road still being widened ever so slowly with small stretches being concreted, this is going to have it's share of mishaps as well, like this one where a Honda Amaze slid off the road partially.

The road widening work is still ongoing at various places and still a long way before completion. The stretch near HAL market resembles a war ravaged zone but seems like some work is just starting here since a lot of gravel has been spread out to level the road.

This is one long road widening update... I travel on this road every once in a while, and I hope it gets finished soon. School kids and HAL employees, along with office commuters will be saved a lot of hassles once this gets done.

Recently, I did not observe any progress on the Suranjandas Road work between C V Raman Nagar and Old Madras Road junction.
However, after a very long time I traveled on the other side of the road today and was surprised to see a lot of progress

After the BEML signal, the road is yet to be widened outside the BEML factory campus but just after that, from the HAL Tree Park onwards the work has been completed almost till the end of the road (a small portion still incomplete near HAL Signal).
There is a median separating the lanes which is good news.
The only scary thing is that on the left lane there are some protruding portions of the sidewalk (to accommodate what looked like manholes).
Could prove to be dangerous if one sticks to extreme left and driving/riding fast as it can take you by surprise

This road widening work may qualify for some prestigious award, 4 years and still hardly 50% complete, this for a 2Km stretch!

NPV can't thank you enough for this thread, as I stayed there for 10 years (in Gitanjali Apts.) and moved to other city around 2004.
My sister also told about this road widening working also told me about some recent demolition in Bagmane Tech Park.
But taking such a long time to widen not so long road speaks a lot about our country.

Wow. Did not know there was a thread for this. NPV, you can probably create a record for the longest time a thread needs to remain active. This widening will go on and on and on.

I frequently use this road and the word that comes to mind is 'aimless'. Apart from proceeding extremely slowly, there seems to be no clear direction for the work. Work happens in patches here and there and then completely stops. Even for the completed sections, there seems to be a lot of other minor things left pending.

An update on the Suranjandas Road:
In the last 2-3 days, pre-cast concrete medians are being installed on the stretch between C V Raman Nagar and Old Madras Road.
Those familiar with this road will know how chaotic the traffic gets, especially in the evenings when many vehicles use the wrong side to move towards the signal quickly.

While this is a good move, what is surprising and worrying are how the lanes are split - the C V Raman Nagar-Old Madras Road side has 1 lane and the other side has 2 lanes. I would have expected this to be reverse since more traffic movement is actually in the single lane side

Lets see how this pans out in the next few days, here's a picture for now:
