Default Deteriorating state of the NH8 & NH24

Dear Friends,

You would all be aware that National Highway No:8 which connects New Delhi to Jaipur is one of the main and most commonly used highway. It connects New Delhi with many other parts of the country as well. I had a chance of visiting Jaipur when I was invited by an engineering college to visit their college fest. I brought to you the pictures of "Sholay Bike" during that visit.

Now I am bringing to you all another area that has concerned me a lot.

What I am going to discuss here is quite obvious from the title of the thread itself.

The condition of this highway has gone from good to bad to worst in the last decade.

Jaipur is one of the major tourist attractions of our country and we see a large inflow of so many tourists from various parts of the world around the year.

If these are the conditions of the roads, then have we ever thought what kind of impression these tourists must be carrying back home. We talk of Incredible India at one hand, Athiti Devo Bhava on the other hand. But when it comes to the practicality of the road leading us all to this destination the picture is completely the other way round.

Moreover, since it is not far from New Delhi many people would love to drive to Jaipur. Many enthusiasts like us who prefer to drive short distances are actually loosing the whole charm of driving.

The drive to Jaipur from New Delhi today involves full and all kinds of risks.

To start with you have loads of heavy traffic where by the car users feel intimidated at all times. Even the users of SUV's feel intimidated surrounded by large trailers, overloaded container trucks and so on.

This is followed by pathetic road conditions with the highway used not only by pedestrians, motorists or heavy vehicles but if this was not enough now all kinds of animals have also joined the fray.

Come to think of driving it has become an actual art, you come across so many instances where people not only risk their lives but pose great risk to fellow commuters as well.

So here, I am attaching a couple of pictures which I have segregated into certain sections. The first post talks about the traffic conditions on the highway. The second post pictures are of the terrible conditions of the highway. The third post contains pictures of the animals who have joined the fray in using these highways. The forth post show the people who pose real threat to us in our routine daily drive.

Now, This second post highlights the terrible condition of the highway. It is under construction at some places, while water logging can be seen at other areas. Accidents are a common sight. Untidy, messy and pathetic situation for motorists. This is a situation when you pay heavy toll charges. The toll booths are in worst conditions with the signage's gathering dust.

If the above was not all, then we see a lot of animals on the roads. Animals can be seen walking across the various stretches on the highway thereby causing extreme driving conditions and posing great risk of accidents.

Almost all these things can also be said of NH58. I recently went to Haridwar and it was exactly the same story there as well. :(

The Delhi-Jaipur section of NH8 is perhaps the worst that I too have driven and I still recall the nightmarish drive we had during our GQ drive in 2012 (2013 we did again but was anti-clockwise and we were lucky).

Between Delhi and Jaipur, we stopped at every toll for at least 20 minutes and not to forget that each lane in the Toll booth had only trucks with least arrangement for cars.

Nearing the HR-DL border, undone shoulders were so horrible that it looked like an off road track in peak summer month of May.

It is due to this mayhem that we reached Delhi around 3AM and we decided not to stay in Delhi and continued towards Agra all the way to Varanasi.

The density of trucks is also one of the highest on this roads that private cars are minority. I felt driving during the day may have been better.

I had traveled on this stretch in March, 2014 and it seemed to be better than the situation in August last year. Yes, this highway is in bad shape, but it is certainly not the worst in terms of highways. To experience worse highways, try the highway from Muzaffarnagar to Haridwar or Dehradun. These two have a very high density of trucks and practically no tarmac with large potholes. Another badly maintained highway connects Bikaner to Sriganganagar.

Something that I forgot to mention here was that the car I was travelling in was a hired Toyota Corolla. It did suffer from bruises because of this massive traffic and pathetic road conditions. The picture below shows the extent of damage.

Hi mints21

You are absolutely right. The condition of NH8 has gone from bad to worst. It takes 6-7 hours to reach delhi from Jaipur during day time. I recently had to go to Ajmer and the roads till Jaipur were pathetic to say the least. However once you cross Jaipur the highway is amazing and you can't stop yourself from flooring the pedal to metal.

OT- I have observed this problem with almost all major highways connecting to Delhi/NCR to rest of the country. For example the highway which connects Delhi to Agra (Not the Yamuna Expressway) has patches of repair work and is very uneven throughout. The less we talk about animals on the roads better.( I lost my voice in an accident on this highway because of a cow coming in front of my bike out of nowhere.) I had to come to a speed of 0 from 90 on Delhi Chandigarh highway because of a cow crossed the divider and came in front of my car. I was driving in the right most lane. Luckily no one was behind me and i could stop the car in time. So my concern is Is it the story of all National highways in our country.

I absolutely second your thoughts.

The drive between Delhi and Dehradun also resembles your description. The worst part is that land mafia has even encroached on the Meerut bypass by making housing options available right next to it. It defeats the very purpose of bypassing population in the city.

Default NH-24 A Traveller's Nightmare

Hi all, Today I am bringing for you all a National Highway which perhaps seems to be the nightmare for every traveller. It so happened that today I had to travel to Bareilly from Noida and the route is via NH24 only.

Today I realized how pathetic and unruly is the traffic situation on this highway and to add to the pain of the driver there are many examples of poor maintenance on this highway.

My 1st post shall cover the poor conditions of this highway. Here are a few pics for all of you:

1) Broken Railing is used as a way to cross the road.

Now comes the unruly traffic of National Highway 24.

1) Protruding Iron Rods are visible even now. Also notice the broken under-run bar of this truck.

2)The rickshaws and 2-wheelers come from the wrong side and without a signal just cross the road. Secondly, Most of the 2 wheeler riders do not wear helmets.

3) On the starting of the Hapur By-pass this crossing does not have any signal. Hence, It's left to the driver's judgement to cross it.

4) At Gajraula, You can see this Crane coming from the wrong side and these bikers are not even wearing helmets.
Name: Photo0672.jpg

5) Broken under-run bar of a truck sighted at Moradabad By-pass. This is an additional danger to the vehicles behind such trucks because most of them do not keep proper distance while driving.

6) And finally, The Buffalo menace.

Here is my two bit. We travelled (wife, small kid and myself) to Neemrana fort first week of July, 2015 for a weekend visit. Onward journey we took NH8 all the way. There are three major bottlenecks in the 60 odd km stretch from Manesar to Bhiwadi, all where there are new flyovers being constructed (since ages I guess). On all the three bottlenecks impatient drivers (including those in swanky cars) try to outdo other vehicles by either moving on the wrong carriageway, or taking service lanes and then try to cut across all other vehicles while they rejoin the main road. It does not help that most of the roads below these under construction flyovers were waterlogged and broken.

On the way back we left the NH8 about 10 km after the Neemrana toll booth and took the lesser used state highway to Rewari then to Pataudi and then to Bilaspur, which is on NH8 just before Manesar. We rejoined NH8 on Manesar and were saved the three bottlenecks the thoughts of which were giving me a nightmare as it appeared during our onward journey that these bottlenecks on the other side (Bhiwadi to Gurgaon) were much worse.

The detour is about 20 km extra, but saves time and a lot of heartache.

NH8 is indeed in a sad state of affairs. I remember a friend once remarking on our trip to Jaipur some 10 years back that it takes us lesser time to reach Jaipur via NH8 from Delhi than the time taken by Shatabdi express!

Anyone who has driven in a developed country will see the stark difference in road manners, right of way, and general driving sense. A few years back a truck driver in London was apprehended on M4 driving on the wrong side of the carriageway and was summarily given 8 years imprisonment for dangerous driving. In India everyday I see atleast 20 instances per 10 km of wrong side driving. Some years back I took an Englishman to Agra from Delhi, and he was aghast at the number of instances of wrong side driving.
