Came across this article in Bangalore Mirror today. Talks about the reduction in traffic, increase in BMTC revenue (both known) but no reduction in pollution. So basically if the government reads this situation better, than all bangalore needs are increasing the frequency of the buses , better connectivity to all areas & atleast until midnight plus good inter connectivity between metro and buses instead of building more flyovers, widening roads and such. Seriously I dont know why such a simple thing does not get into the brains of these politicians!

On the contrary, they utilise their brains in a better way.

1. How a bridge built with metal can contribute to the coffers?
2. How a tech park can increase the value of the real estate and thereby increase the personal wealth?
3. How ಹಳೆ ಕಲ್ಲು ಹೊಸ ಬಿಲ್ಲು (old stone and new bill) can increase the personal wealth?
4. How can I profit from contracting works to private players?
5. How a problem can be monetised to the maximum?
6....

Latest on the flyovers. I hope the trees on the Jayamahal road and Ballari road can survive - for now.

BMTC has to bring down the Volvo fares to stay competitive with Taxis. Imagine a family of 4 paying more than 200Rs to travel 10Km in a Volvo. They will in all probability hire a cab which can take them door to door and that will be cheaper as well. Families have moved from BMTC to cabs in a big way.

This article popped up on my Facebook wall today:

http://taxinomics.com/the-death-of-a-driver/

An interesting line in this article: Possibly there’s a lesson or two that the Indian authorities can learn from the Federal Trade Commission of US that coerced Uber to cough up $20 million in fine last month for the lies it spread to attract drivers.

Not sure how true this is though.

It seems that all the bookings are routed only to the drivers whose cars are financed by Uber. If a booking is made by a customer and there are 3 self financed uber cars available on the spot the App still searches for Uber financed cars and transmits the booking to those drivers even though they may be 3 - 4 km away. Only in the absence of an Uber financed car is the booking routed to the other drivers.

Another new feature introduced by the App is that if the car is stationary for more than 20 min .. no bookings are routed to it . So they have to keep moving all the time even if empty thereby using up fuel.

Not sure how true these 2 are , but this is what I heard.
I believe there is another category where OLA/ UBER buys a car and hires a driver on fair salary basis. The Driver after completing certain kilometers and certain period (tentatively 3 years) of running, he can seek to become the owner of the same Cab that he drove. In such a case, the terms of his association would be revised.

The latest grapevine is that many drivers are planning on forming a cooperative and launching their own app based taxi service. Though this might seem a far fetched idea, nobody knows what might transpire in the near future.

Here are the screenshots of the report that appeared in today's newspaper.

That's the spirit!

Fight against strength - with strength, not with weak pitiful pleading & hunger strikes.

Really glad the guys choose to fight back the right way. Forget bankruptcy, Uber/Ola wouldn't have cared two hoots if the cabbies even died.

But this is just the start, like I said earlier :

Yes, Uber may burn more capital to prevent it from succeeding.
Yes, even OLA/Uber may try unethical maneuvering tactics...
Forming unions may help. But they'll need to ensure cabbies don't foul & use Uber even secretly.

Let's see.

Edit : As consumers, this may mean that we'd pay more, but it'd be responsible consumerism. C'mon, let's buy from sustainable businesses, rather than irresponsible & socially indifferent, so called "disruptive" startups.

I hired an Ola yesterday, and for a fairly long distance, about 50kms. The Ola driver was driving someone else's car, and had a fixed salary. He did not support the strike, and he says neither the owner did. The owner is a retired ex-serviceman and took 3 Datsun Go's on loan and drives one. They made modest incomes from day 1, never indulged in fake trips and they still sustain steady incomes. Only now, they are taking small detours to avoid protestors. His car had the front windshield busted in Ghaziabad. The protestors, in most cases were the ones with record of fake trips and "outsmarting" the aggregator and they targeted those who wouldn't be "dishonest".

The driver admitted he has to do hard work, but also said, his income has now stopped his wife from working as a domestic help, instead runs a small time tailoring shop. He also said, people who have both Uber and Ola, faced more problems. This guy stuck with Ola.

Couldn't agree with you more. Don't know how serious the drivers are about the proposed alternative, but if they do go forward with it - they may as well learn a trick or two from this.

TCS/Sahakara Sarige buses are an important means of transport for people of Malenadu. Having travelled in those well kept and prompt buses for over five years, I wouldn't mind if the Ola/Uber rebels emulate them.

Drivers striking? Demanding no new sign ups? Protesting against too many drivers and less duty?
