BTW dont go by all the words... there is some amount of marketing involved in the writeup... but the route mentioned remains the same.. let me know if it still sounds exciting :-)

Good to hear that u'r impressed by some aspects of Kerala..

Guess NH47 is one connecting most of the districts within kerala... Guess these(17 and 47) are the only two NH running through Kerala and also one small stretch from munnar to madurai...

Yeah and by the way we had a Qualis and a Scorpio to our escort right from Pune-Kashmir-Kanyakumari-Pune.... we were just 4 riders 2 drivers and some luggage amongst 2 SUV's... I preferred the Scorpio and after reaching Indore (the first halt) drove it all the way to Delhi and then was driven by another friend of mine... the qualis has amazing brakes I feel the Scorp cannot match.. it does have good steering geometry the area where the Scorp loses out... also drove on my way back from Mangalore to Pune via NH-17 with just 2 halts one in Goa for some liquour shopping and the next at a Mahad for a break !!

Don't tell me that a KiHo is a Kinetic Honda!

Yes Mohit KiHo stands for Kinetic Honda and was ridden across the Sahara desert by Mr. Dilip Bam who is a renowned Auto Journalist and some of his team members.....I am currently fulfilling my part time passion of testing bikes (all brands and makes) ...and By the way folks this article at indiabike.com hasnt been written by me its written by Dilip details of whom can be sought at http://www.indiacar.com/index2.asp?p...t/dilipbam.htm

And check http://www.kineticindia.com/achieve.asp for the achievements of Kinetic in terms of endurance (It also includes the Sahara crossing feat)

Finally after 4 long years I managed to get hold of the ride pictures. The route we followed was:

It all started in the mid of December. Four of us from Pune left in a Scorpio and a Qualis headed to Jammu. We went via Indore - Delhi - Jammu route. I drove the Scorpio from Indore to Delhi and it was fun. 4 riders, 2 drivers and two boots full of spares and advertising material. Reached Jammu in two and half days IIRC.

We were headed to Patnitop in Jammu and we had reached Jammu late in the afternoon. Got into the hotel freshened up and did a trial run from Jammu to Patnitop on the scooters. It was December and Jammu was freezing as hell. But evenings were quite pleasant. Hotel bookings in Patnitop were not done hence we hurried up our way on the Srinagar highway full of mountainous roads with white rock rivers in the valley. It was super fun. We reached Patnitop late at around 9:00 pm and had a two day comfort halt there. Checked into a beautiful hotel. Temperatures were -4 degrees and we had to go to Nathatop next morning to shoot the scooters in Snow. Best solution to battle cold was Old Monk and we did require a lot of it. We couldn't take many pictures in Patnitop since Dilip Bam couldn't handle the cold there and was transported back to Jammu early next morning. Needless to say he was the only guy with a camera. These are pictures taken on the ride from Jammu to Patnitop:

Some work has come up. I will post the ride log from Jammu in subsequent posts. Stay tuned.

I did the Kashmir-Kanyakumari drive on the same route in a Matiz in 2002. 3,900 kms in 4 days.
Day 1: Srinagar-Panipat
Day 2: Panipat-Sagar
Day 3/4 (non-stop): Sagar-Kanyakumari-Trivandrum

Awesome hvkumar. We did it in 14 days. We were publicity hungry. The route is doable in 4 days. And you started from Srinagar which is way north compared to Patnitop. I think around 400 kms more? We ended up clocking around 4200 kms on the odo.

I realised just now that we followed different routes - not through Bhopal (but through Jhansi and Sagar) and via Madurai (not through Calicut). I followed the true GQ route (not yet conceived at that time). My route was as follows:

Srinagar-Jammu-Ludhiana-Panipat
Panipat-Delhi-Agra-Gwalior-Jhansi-Lalitpur-Sagar
Sagar-Laknadon-Nagpur-Hyderabad-Bangalore-Salem-Madurai-Tirunelveli-Kanyakumari

A good adventure! But it might've been mighty boring on Kinetic Nova. At least for me it would've been.

And there's this guy in Kollam, Kerala who alongwith his wife and two children did a similar India Khoj on his Kinetic Honda. Yes 4 people on a single KiHo. This was sometime in the early 90s.

Thats a long journey. I can't even imagine doing it on a scooter. . How did the Nova hold up in such extreme condition? Previously Kinetic had done some mileage run in their step through( don't remember model name) , they got whopping 100 kmpl .

Shouldn't this be in the travelogues section? Anyways, adventurous trip, nice write up (Dilip's, that is).

How come you were allowed on the Gundulpet - (mananthavady?) Calicut stretch? My understanding is that it closed during night?

And strange that the first pic has only hoardings of films and tyres? any coincidence?

Edit - PS:- looking at the date and age of the thread, and the section, I thought this was a prank; only coz of the pics and HV's postings did I believe that this is serious.

Apologies!!!

I don't think there is any restriction on riding in bikes through that stretch at night. I have myself driven through in bike both through Mudumalai-Bandipur and Sultan's Battery-Gundulpet in the middle of the night.
