top speeds have all been in india
I back off the throttle at 160kmph
so thats my top speed on
1.My diesel swift-Pete'd-trivandrum airport road at 6AM
2.Dad's Verna CRDI-NH17 between guruvayoor and kunnumkulam at 3AM
3.Bro's ford endeavour 2.5 litre TDCI on kerala's only 4lane at noon

yes! they are all diesel.

I'm sure the verna can do much higher speeds. the amount of revs left at 160kmph in 5th was astounding!

the endeavour is seriously quick too. gets to 140kmph effortlessly and cruises and still has juice left for quick overtaking.

swift gets to 120kmph with ease. begins slowing down at 160. but have heard people doing 180 in that baby.

Note-
the swift felt most stable
the brakes on the verna were the most reassuring and predictable
the endeavour felt the safest, but most uncomfortable(ridewise)

Very well said. Combination of all three would be the dream car.

thats what it is ....a dream car...all i can do is dream on.
I think, I will go to my grave with a top speed of 160kmph,wont try to go faster than that, but will never stop trying to reach 160, quicker and quicker. acceleration is everything.

Echo my thoughts ripper, 160 (even 150) is good enough for our roads - actually dangerous, but can do it once in a while on some nice open stretches - but how quick you reach 0-60-100-160 is that matters. Hope one day we can acquire our dream car which can do this.

Verna is due for second service and hope to see a bit improvement in the top speed. Would like to share with you that Mumbai Pune expressway has many stretches where you can see road kilometres ahead of you and very sparse no of other vehicles on road and no turns or other roads merging into it. Same is true for Baroda Ahmedabad expressway and near Jaipur too and hence, the speeds mentioned as 190+ is not too much if the car is capable with good tyres, pressure checked before starting the run and seat belt in place and slowly building the momentum. It has its own fun.

Ive recently driven the Verna diesel on Mum-Pune express way,to the max we stretched out to 190-195km after thet the engine gets locked, this was without any mods but with 14inch Plati rims and yokohama tubless tyres, when you shift the car to second gear its darn too fast to control.

Post My top speeds

I achieved my top speed in an Audi A4, through the Autobahn - Germany. It was 220 Kmph. Have driven few other cars too, in which I did speeds close this this.

"No matter how fast you drive, there will be always someone who is driving faster than you" - this is very true in the Autobahn.

In India, it is too unsafe to do high speeds like that. Max I ever touched is 165Kmph in a Swift Vxi. (Minus speedo error - if there) This was done on the N.I.C.E. road from Electroic City - Bannerghetta in Bangalore. Here's a picture of the speedo, that's my wife taking another picture in the mobile.

Can one think of brakes at speed in excess of 160 kmph?

I have once touched 140 kmph once and took off my foot from the acc and thats my top speed. Do not want to take it further as I have the wiry stock tyres in place

Just wanted to find out if brakes can be applied mildy to slow down at speeds in excess of 120 kmph?

Yes it was. On an all stock Swift VXi. I don't know whether Swift can do higher speeds, but at 165, I felt that it is not safer to try to increase the speed.

As it can be seen, it was taken from the back seat, by my cousin. I was driving his car. @165, how can I take the camera and click myself this picture...

lucky you! my wife would be busy trying to throttle ME while I'm doing anything higher than 120.

why not think of brakes? of course, you dont want to be stomping on the pedal at that speed, you need to gently put pressure on the pedal and progressively increase the force, if, you feel the car is doing well. if you see an irregularity on the surface, or a bump or some sand, its best you dont touch the brakes, just ease your foot of the throttle.

if you feel the car losing its composure, get off the brakes.

obviously, if you have the space, its best to do what you do now, ease off the accelerator.

In my experience, all wives/parents fear is the sudden acceleration than the actual speed. If you increase the speed suddenly - second gear and floor the gas pedal - they'll most probably scream, even if the speed is just 70 or so. But if you increase the speed very slowly, lets say in 5th gear from 50Kmph to 120 Kmph, chances are that they won't even notice it, if you're driving on a nice straight stretch of road!

But they'll surely complain if you do a 150 plus or so. But now my wife is learning driving nowadays, and somehow now she likes speed... strange.
