275 kmph (or maybe 280, at this speed you can't really watch your speed!) in France, Lyon Geneva highway, Merc ML prepared AMG.
185 kmph, Honda Civic, Jaipur - Ajmer highway (not very wise though to reach these speeds in India open road....)

Default Crazy times

When I was young and reckless (but of course), and working in Bangalore, a few of us friends used to take our cars to the Coimbatore bypass for speed runs.

The 19km (or 26? I forget) L&T bypass was the only kind then (in South). It has a few toll gates, and I think between the 2nd and 3rd there is a long stretch, where there is a small climb to a bridge and then downhill. When you drive towards Bangalore, the wind is always behind you.

On the third day of buying Ikon 1.6 Rally Sport (this was in Oct 2000), with hardly 200km on the odo and stock tubed tyres (!!), two of us drove to Coimbatore. We folded the rear view mirrors, removed the floor mats, switched off the a/c, put high beams and hit the climb on overdrive. The speedo reading was 180-ish. After the bridge, while we shot down, I down shifted to 4th and literally stood on the accelerator pedal. The friend was leaning over to read the speedo. We hit 205kmph.

During the 10 months I owned that car, on the same road, I used to do 180-195 almost on a regular basis. When driving alone, I have covered Trichur to Bangalore (500km) in 5:45 driving time in that Ikon.

Some other speeds we achieved on this road were 154 on a non-MPFI Zen with 4 adults, 138 on my 94 M800, 165 in an MPFI Esteem. All stock vehicles. All readings from speedo. All runs during day, but for the Zen.

We did all that on stock tubed tyres. Now when I think of it, I get shivers.

DT

PS: Recently during my road trip in Adventure I went through the same stretch. It was nostalgic, and things were very different -- I was older, had my wife with me and road was now crowded. I think I did 120kmph! I did better on the GQ, but the max was 145 or so. That's it.

This is quite strange since all Merc's are limited by the factory itself to 155mph/250kmph. Did you do this in an de-limited car?

You might be right but it was few years aga and this car (my father's car actually and unfortunately!!) was prepared by AMG. I think it was 320 bhp (or more) and they modify suspension, chassis etc... Driving this car was fantastic (except for FE that was if I remember 4-5 kmpl!!)...

I foung this website you can check out what they are doing now Mercedes-AMG

I just loved reading it really! It brought back own memories.

I remember doing Satara-Pune in 1:20 minutes on RX135. Same day, did Katraj - KalyaniNagar in 20 min in evening crowd to catch up a conference call. Damn, I can't do that even in my car these days, which pumps in 10 times BHP and has double top-speed on 4-lane road with divider.

Hahaha. Ok, correction: we shifted the driver side mats to the back. Actually come to think of it, even if we had dumped them on the roadside, we would have got it as at the end of the run we used to turn around, to do it, ...er, one more time :-)
