| Senior - BHPian | Even if the concrete block was of inferior quality, it is just too much. Imagine a 40-50 kg (hard to imagine) person falling off the 5th floor of a building onto your car and the car not getting a dent on the top. Now imagine a concrete block that is narrower and causes more damage, making no scratch. It is unimaginably hard to believe.

| BHPian | After seeing that photo, I dont think other than something like the Force Trax anything could survive without a dent. Humm let me think which car is actually designed to take 11 guys not inside but outside. ............

| That's exactly the point !! Carriers are bolted on to the frame to transfer the load. If any car can take 6 good built cricketers (that's about 500 kgs) without any damage to the roof, you can as well put all the luggages directly on to the roof and tie them up to the roof rail. |

| BHPian | Hi tsk1979, no offense, but I guess everybody's asking (including me) because it looks like an incredulous claim. Twenty meters is around 66 feet, that's like the concrete block fell from the 5th floor ! Something that falls from that height would be traveling at a healthy clip of 71 Kmph (19.8 m/s) at ground level ! And then there's the weight, 50 Kgs IS a lot of weight - assuming the density of concrete to be 2.4 tons/cubic meter, the block that fell on your car must've been almost a cubic foot, around 27cms all-around, actually. Was the concrete block a slab ? I'm no physicist, & I could be wrong, but if we assume that your car's suspension compressed by around 6 inches, the impact force was around 33,000 Newtons - that's like 3.4 tons on your car's roof !?! Which in turn is like 3 Palios piled on top of your roof. On second thought, it's not so incredible after all, since cars ARE designed to carry a lot of load on their roofs. Some manufacturers even advertise the safety of their cars by piling one on top of each other - Volvo used to do that a lot I think. Should we call up the "MythBusters" ? ![]() |

| Firstly apologies for the misleading title. Over enthusiasm to put the topic for discussion led to it !! Also my anger at the every increasing dents on my Swift from minor skirmishes led to me rushing with the post. But the fact remains that the gauge of the Maruti metal is their weak link in comparison to the other manufacturers. From the pic you can see at max 250 kgs of weight would have piled on the roof that too not instantaneously. Therefore roof need not have really dented. |
