Default 800 kgs payload in a stock car..

Well..where do i begin? Who am i to blame?

The car - can anyone guess the car in question - scroll down for the answer.

The transporters strike gave me an opportunity to test my own vehicle with gross abuse.

Thankfully, the strike is withdrawn and all operations are normal.

Yesterday, had gone to meet my customer who is 170 kms away from my factory. The situation was such that as i had no raw material for processing, i had to shut shop tommorrow [today]. All the RM had been processed and we needed more.

Our customer was very kind and also lamented about his helpless situation and how his customers in turn were getting affected.

On explaining our situation to our customer, he suggested a wild idea, which though initially I rejected, came back and accepted as i did not want to shut shop.

My car was driven to his stores and left there for loading the RM. I had meanwhile folded the rear seats [double folded] to accomodate the maximum volume.

Requested them to load the RM. I had to leave for a meeting within and hence left the car and went on with my business.

Came back after 2 hours and saw a horrible sight! Sorry could nt take pictures.

The rear had completely squatted and the front was a few microns in air [just kiddin]. Got all papers and started to drive the car back to my factory.

The distance is around 35 kms of village roads and 130 kms of GQ.

The first impression - damn, the car was rear heavy and the rebound was so amplified that i literally had my rear on its own

The suspension bottomed out completely at the slightest bump and i had to be very very careful as the steering too, had a funny effect.

Took 1 hour to do the 35kms village road, which i usually do in 22 minutes.

Once on the main road, slowly stepped up speed to say 70 kmph or so. The braking effect too was bad. Thankfully I have driven / currently drive jeeps that have worse no brakes, hence was able to manage.

The funny thing is if you shift a lane on the GQ, the car turns in after a millisecond and there is a rebound on the steering. The DISADVANTAGE of a Coil spring / multi link rear suspension setup for carrying loads.

Reduced speed to 50kmph.

Also, noticed that even the slightest of the bumps which i usually do at 120 / 140 with no feel at all had the worst affects of continuous rocking on the car. Had around 650 kgs of RM in the vehicle plus me [driver] and my office helper boy - total load must be around 850 kgs.

Its really funny to hold on to the steering wheel while the car keeps rocking even after the smallish bump, which one never imagined existed.

I realised how silly [read bumpy] our GQs are and why truckers sometimes loose control.

I finally reached my factory, unloaded the car and came back home [another 49 kms] at 2145 hrs to call it a day! Oh boy, what a pleasure it was to drive the same underpowered car without the load. I was weaving with pleasure, taking it till 4600 rpm for upshifts and literally was like a drunken rabbit running along until i came home.

Ok - can anyone guess the car which took the bashing and came out alive?

This is not the best thing to do. Overloading this much can seriously affect the car body and the suspension can also be afffected. Moreover the chances of accident due to changed behavior of the car is also quite high.
Pretty unsafe to do so.

BTW, nice writeup with proper reason to make this trip.

Your car is Indica diesel. Or Maruti 800.

I agree with you 1000% that it is unwise, unsafe etc etc. But i didnt have much choice!

No, the car is not the Indica Diesel or the Maruti 800!

you mentioned you used to do 120-140 on your car and did not feel the small bumps at these speeds. It cant be M800 for sure.
Sedan it has to be. Maybe Indigo.

The reason for guessing it Indigo was simple.

Noone would risk any other sedan for such a Stunt (if I can call it a stunt)

You are right again - i wondered, after all they have made TRUCKS for decades..they cant go wrong. Obviously TATAs design a car / vehicle for atleast 250% overload etc etc..

Plus I've had a previous experience of transporting Bricks in my 02 Indica. But that was a different story altogether!

I wonder how anyone can call it a stunt..it was not a very wise thing to do, but one always explores limits .. right?

Nothing to beat the Omni if you have to carry such loads, with the rear seat removed.
