European cars have simply not cut it in the 4 - 6 lakh segment, the list of failures goes on. Peugeot 309, Fiat Palio, Skoda Fabia, Mahindra Logan....it's only the Fiat Uno which met with some level of success (but was botched up anyways).
This price-sensitive segment is dominated by low cost masters like Maruti, Hyundai, Tata etc. The Jap & Korean competition has proven simply too strong for the Europeans. Can they match them on cost? Can they offer maintenance as low? Or reliability as good?

No doubt this will be VW's toughest market in that segment; but Volkswagen seems to be showing great determination to have a meaningful presence in India. The fact that they are making a sedan of one of their most successful hatchback models only for India goes to show the same. The group also has capacity for making about 130,000 - 140,000 cars which is 10% of today's car market. So they do seem to have a plan.
Further Polo (as I recall of what I read in AutoBild) has the latest diesel tech (blue series or so) that VW claims will be the most efficient diesel engine in production when launched - 26 kmpl. Now that can be a game changer!
BTW, 3 of the 10 largest selling / ever sold cars in the world come from VW - Golf, Beetle and Passat. Ford is the only other car maker to have 3 cars in the top 10. Toyota and Honda have only one each (Corolla and Civic respectively)!
