Default Honda CBR 400R rumours?

Has anyone here hear of a possible new bike from Honda - a 400cc version of the CBR 250R, probably called CBR 400R?

Here's a page with photos: 2012 CBR400R in Feb 2012 Young Machine Magazine Scoop

From what I read, the Thai factory is being kitted out to build a larger bike. If true, it could be the 400R speculated above and elsewhere, and producing the bike at Thai factory would also imply that Honda is aiming at another 'global bike', which means it would be cheaper like the CBR 250R (compared to rest of the Honda lineup like CBR600F or RR etc).

Some articles mentions the licensing laws changing in Europe as the reason for Honda to start producing 400cc bikes again. The current licensing laws in Europe restricts a new biker to 33 bhp / 25kW bikes for the first two years, which roughly equates to 250cc bikes - and Ninja 250R is exactly at the 33 bhp limit, making it perfect starter bike. And Honda CBR 250R with just 27 (or is it 29?) bhp is also fine. However, EU is changing these laws from 2013. Under the new system, there will be two types of restriction. First would be the usual 33 bhp / 25kW, and the second would be a 47 bhp / 35kW restriction. This is probably where a 400 cc really fits in, and I think Yamaha already has a model out called R4 I think, so it would be natural for Honda to bring out something like a CBR 400R.

I would think a CBR 400R would sell very well in India!

Just correcting myself quickly, the new restriction class coming in 2013 in Europe might be 51 bhp rather than 45 - I am not a 100% on it. And Yamaha R4 is 250cc, not 400cc as I thought. Anyone looking for more on rumours, google 'Honda CBR 400R 2012 2013" etc.

This would make things a lot more interesting in the Indian market. The 400cc bikes will be the ones to go for before graduating to the 600cc and then onto the litre superbikes.

In addition, a bike like this would be really useful for both the track and the road.

I think it is time to start saving up for a 400 cc bike. Only for use on the highway and track though, but still.

I am really excited about this news, thanks for sharing

A 400 would be the perfect beginner's Superbike. I've had the most fun on Rtech's ZZR400...fun because I could actually high-revv it on Indian roads. Fat chance of doing that too often with a liter class. In fact, I'm waiting for the 600s for exactly this reason; the liter bikes are a bit too much for our driving conditions.

That's every Indian bikers dream news.
A bike lesser in cc is lesser in price for the Indian pocket.
Ideally what a normal person can afford in North America is what only a hard working top notch Indian can get.
I wish we have bikes which are VFM and priced realistic for Indians.
A 400cc bike will be really nice to own, but again it can be put to use only on the highway (correct me if I am wrong).
Inside city it will be just like riding any other bike as the power on lower cc bikes, kicks in only on higher speed unlike the 1000+ cc bikes.
I want one.
Wonder why Yahama is still stuck with 150's.

Well, I have to add that this is purely speculation, and most of it seems to have originated from a 'scoop' article in an Asian magazine. Following various threads on various sites like this, some seems to have commented on how they got insider information on Thai factory being kitted out to handle larger volume and bigger bikes, and also that the magazine, in the past, was the first to come out with a scoop on CBR 250R, and as we know if turned out to be true etc. So here's hoping.

PS: I ride an 9 year old 600cc Fazer and have been thinking of getting something newer and slightly more efficient (petrol prices are going crazy here) as my daily 60 km commuter. I did consider CBR 250R for a while, but I think it would struggle to maintain 120-140 kmph comfortably on the motorway, so I am hoping the CBR 400R fits the bill. I think BMW is also tweaking their lineup to match the upcoming EU bhp restrictions, so I wouldn't be surprised if others follow.

Is this going to be a twin like the Ninja 250R ?
Until the mid-90s, the big 4 had stellar 400 supersports , replete with full fairings, dual discs, USD forks, water cooled inline 4 DOHC motors that revved high and sounded like angry beasts , I remember seeing a ZX-4 around Pune which was pure music.

What have they done with those castings and molds etc ? Couldn't they shift all the manufacturing jigs and restart production here ? There would be some work to do with fuelling - EFI replacing carbs and catalytic converters to meet emission norms , but this middle-weight category could very well be ideal for India.

No point having them in twin avatar, these bikes will loose their very high revving character, sound but seeing the current trend if they decide to launch i am sure they will launch with twin only. But still something is better than nothing on that class. Why not CB SF400 or CB400 twin, lovely bikes they are, even V twin would be killer.

Range of CBR headed to India:

http://www.zigwheels.com/news-featur...n-japan/15830/

Quote:
Honda unveiled its CBR400 range for the Japanese market before its official launch at the Osaka Motor Show which will begin on Friday, March 15, 2013. Honda had earlier revealed its 400cc parallel twin engine in January and has been very swift in launching the bike with the new engine. Visually the bike resembles the CBR500 range and will be similarly launched in three variants like the CBR400R, CBR400F and CBR400X. By rolling out the bike in various versions like full-faired, naked and tourer, Honda aims to satisfy the various demands of different bikers. Apart from visual resemblance, the bike shares lot of parts and features with its elder sibling. Because of this platform sharing it is expected that Honda will be able to price the bike competitively.

You stole my words. It would be great if we could have the CB series (e.g. CB400/600 naked or semi faired) in Indian roads. The current crop of 250R/500R arent worthy for the CBR tag. I wait for the day when we could have an affordable inline-four bike within 5 lacs in India. The deep bass they emanate still make me crazy!

Drive safe,
Abhishek

The following link from Bike India website confirms that the CBR 400R will be launched in India in 2014.

http://bikeindia.in/honda-unveils-all-new-cbr-400r/

This would be probably because Honda would require time to get their localization for the 400R in place as they did with the CBR 150R and CBR 250R. Since Honda has announced their intention of becoming the number 1 two-wheeler manufacturer of India by 2016. If that is the case then I would expect the bike to retail for atleast 3 lakhs.

At the ongoing Tokyo Motor Show, Honda has revealed the CBR400R. This again is a sports tourer with comfortable ergonomics for both city riding and highway touring.

This fully-faired motorcycle will be powered by a 400cc, parallel-twin, DOHC, 4-valve engine. This 400cc ride is introduced to fill the gap between the CBR250R and the CBR650F. Its styling is slightly different from the other two motorcycles and even looks sportier between the trio. We are yet to confirm the engine specs.

The front end looks more aggressive now and the tail end looks sharp with the short fender. The motorcycle is quite a head turner. Honda’s press release states that it will soon be available commercially.
