Hi All,
Thank you for all your time insights. Finally on Dussehara I took the plunge and got the Ninja 650. Next and the most important thing safety gear for which we have tons of information right here in the forum and RTO formality.

Congrats. What eventually made you decide on the 650? And yes an ownership thread would be nice.

Hi All ,

Its been some time now that I have started my journey on the 650. In these 6 months or so I was able to put in 3000 odd kms mostly with a superbike group in Pune called ACES. The bike is a hoot to ride and really an excellent stepping stone to world of superbikes.

Congrats. Looks nice. Do share some details about this bike assuming it's pre-owned like what price you bought it for and accessories that you added etc.

Cheers and Ride Safe !!

First of all a big thank you to all those who contributed in making my decision.

Secondly I am guilty of not putting my experience sooner but I think this is for the best since in the past 8 months or so I was able to put in more kilometers on the odometer and thus in a better position to write my thoughts.

As I mentioned in my opening post this was going to be my first big bike and I put in a lot of deliberation before I came to the conclusion of buying the 650. The factors which went for the bike were :

1. It was a bigger capacity bike (although used) available at a price of a smaller capacity one.
2. In testride which I took , I felt at home in first 5 minutes. The seating position and the height were completely comfortable for me.
3. The low-end torque is great and is extremely helpful in stop and go traffic. Yes the engine size does pose an issue of heat generation, but I felt that is well controlled by the fairings which diverts heat away from your legs.

I had several Sunday-rides on it in and around Pune and it never failed to put a smile on my face. Initial days were spent unlearning the riding habits of a 100cc bike. I used to upshift early and so could never extract the full potetial of the bike. As days and rides went past I slowly started using the higher rev counter and sometimes redline before I upshifted. This bike is an extremely capable machine and could hold candle with the friendly neighbourhood R1s , Ducatis and CBRs, of course not the speeds that these motorcycles are capable of.

As for the build quality, there is nothing to complain of. It's Japanese and it is great. All the bits and pieces are well put together and they are simple. The part are available with a minimal wait time. The 650 is serviced by Bajaj and KTM which is a added advantage as the service center is minutes walk from my home. I had a tip over in a ride and left mirror broke. It was made available in 10 days. I have serviced the bike once and the bill came to about 3500Rs most of which was engine oil.

All and all I feel I have taken a right decision for the 650. Its not a race track machine but a very capable and versitle motorcycle which you can throw in twisties and long rides alike.

Also to enhance my riding skill I attended a motorcycle riding session which was organized by Kawasaki India. This course was aimed at making the rider aware of basic techniques like braking , turning , couter-steering etc. I found it really helpful.

Congrats on your bike! If you don't mind, how much did it cost you? Did you buy it from some classifieds site? I feel wary of people selling these bikes since I feel there might be some problem with them

I bought it from my neighbour for 4.25L.

Sunday ride to Mahabaleshwar. Beautiful weather . Super fun to ride. The bike performed extremely well in twisties of Pasarni ghat in wet weather and fog.

You have maintained the machine extremely well. Good Job . In one of the photos, the black portion of the fuel tank seems to have a glossy shining finish. Originally, it is of matte finish, but it looks glossy. Did you put 3M PPF or any other stuff over it ?

Congratulations on the bike, and the good times riding it. It is great to see you taking classes to improve your riding skills. One word of advice, if I may: Pay special attention to being smooth rather than quick. As you get better at it, the quickness will come on its own.
