Rajith, stay away from these model Scorpios, especially the Gear drive ones (whatever price they come at). Hope you got the drift.

I have heard that the Scorpios with the Turbo DX2 (non-CRDe) engine are good : are these with chain-drive ? Which years were they available?

A quick note on various engines used in Scorpios. I am not sure of the badging used as they always look cock-eyed.

Scorpio NEF 2.6 BS1 – Gear Drive – Non CRDe – no ECU as operated by mechanical fuel pump – without EGR
Scorpio NEF 2.6 BS2 – Gear Drive – Non CRDe – no ECU as operated by mechanical fuel pump – with EGR
Scorpio NEF 2.6 BS1 – Chain Drive – Non CRDe – no ECU as operated by mechanical fuel pump – without EGR
Scorpio NEF 2.6 BS2 – Chain Drive – Non CRDe – no ECU as operated by mechanical fuel pump – with EGR
Scorpio NEF 2.6 BS3 – Chain Drive – CRDe – with ECU – with EGR without EGR cooler.
Scorpio NEF 2.5 L Euro-II - Chain drive- Non CRDe- no ECU as operated by mechaical fuel pump- with EGR
Scorpio NEF 2.5 L Euro-IV - Chain drive- CRDe- with ECU- with EGR and EGR cooler

Leave the first two and select among the rest. If you do not want ECU controlled, select 3,4. Hope this helps.

Spike

PS- There is a similar post by DB Sir, I do not know where it is, taking that as a reference I have added other engines to the list.

Thanks for the info, SPIKE ARRESTOR

Any clues (sound of the engine?) how to identify if it is gear-drive or chain-drive?

Yeah, you are right. The first impression is through the noise; Chain drives are relatively quieter, Gear drives are comparably noisy. I will post details (pics) and search for engine code which will tell you the exact difference. Just settling down, please bare with me, will do that ASAP.

Rajith,

I can tell you some way of identifying the the 4th Engine option Which Spike mentions (the best among Non CRDe with EGR).

The meter Console will be looking like this
Buying a used Mahindra Scorpio-new-scorpio.jpg

Where as the old one looks like this
Buying a used Mahindra Scorpio-old-scorpio.jpg

Again the number plate placed low as compared to other versions.
It used to come with 16 Inch tires with improved Break drum and break pads ( Which are designed for Initial CRDe )

Please see the pic of my Scorpio for Eg.

BTW I am looking for an upgrade now, If you are interested to have a look at my Non CRDe 2005 Please PM me

Gear drive engines were termed as SZ2600 whereas Chain drives were called SZ2600+.

The Engine nos. for Chain drive were as follows:-

BS-I -- BF34Axxxxx
BS-II -- BD34Axxxxx

This I believe is more than sufficient.

I am the proud owner of a 2004 chain drive 2.6dx and I can vouch for its reliability. I have clocked only 75k on it and its a beauty. Properly maintained, its a hoot to drive and the power delivery is brutal, compared to the linear power delivery of the new Hawks. Kinda like the old original RX100s , if you can get your hands on a decent machine, its like a collectilble now. Not to mention this is the best looking model (imho) in the whole Scorpio range.

I changed my first set of tires (15") to 16" at 65k kms!! 7 yrs down, I haver not had a change of even bulbs on the vehicle, and its running original clutch plates etc. etc. I spent approx. 20k at 50k kms to overhaul the front suspension, and that too because it was used roughly in Coorg for a short span.

I have ready buyers lined up for my vehicle, if I plan to sell. But its not gonna happen anytime soon. If anyone is planning to buy used, I highly reccommend this model. Posting some pics of the "Metal Hammer" here
